Tattoos and piercings - why?

Years ago, one of the ladies at an account I serviced was quite unhappy. Her daughter had gotten a Tongue Piercing, and it had gotten infected. She had to have almost half of her tongue removed, and was having difficulty eating. Tattoos and piercings are 2 things that I never had any desire to have. I suppose that an ear piercing for for a lady to wear earrings, is no big deal, but when a person covers their body with tattoos, or has lip, nose, or eyebrow piercings, I question their "self esteem".

I honestly have had nothing in my life worthy of a tattoo. Don't get me wrong, sometimes I wish I did.

Obviously its none of my business, but I've seen a number of young women who have usually just one arm tattooed from wrist to shoulder. I've always wanted to ask them, "what does that represent" but it would likely come out offensive, so I keep my mouth shut and ignore it.

Not Everybody . I wouldn't have a tattoo if you paid me, in all honesty if I liked a picture of something so much that I really wanted to have it with me all the time, I'd put a picture in my back pocket.. much easier to get rid of when you get fed up..

My ex husband was in the Royal Navy.. the first tattoo he ever got was a full sleeve scroll with ''My darling wife Holly" all the way down his arm surrounded by roses.. around his wrist he got our daughters' name...in another scroll

After we divorced and he married someone else she insisted he get my name taken out.. and with such a huge tattoo.. it looked terrible all flowered over... that marriage failed as well.. and now he's on his own after a third pairing failed, and with a horrible faded scrolled over mess of a Tattoo on his arm, with 70 year old skin... NUTS !!
Literally self inflicted! Lol!

I never wanted a tattoo but I do have pierced ears and would be lost without those tiny piercings because they hold my beautiful earrings in place painlessly.

I've never seen anyone whose appearance was in any way improved by a tattoo or piercing. I just don't understand the motive behind having such hideous disfigurement. Some people are just covered with them.
That's just me though. A grumpy old woman!
True. But then there are tribes that permanently disfigure the lips with lip-plates and a South East Asian tribe that disfigures the female necks with neck wrings

Why? I think it mostly is a form of 'self-expression' for many, whatever
that chosen self-expression might be.

I have no tats, and for a short period of time awhile back, considered
a tiny tat for the upper part of my back or neck.

I find tatoos repulsive, even if I like the person. Any kind, if they are big. Small, don't care. Harry Styles has the worst tatoos, Pete Davidson too.
I don't like them too. Would never date a woman with tattoos. But that's hypothetical since I'm married.

I agree. The people I know who have tattoos have them because they like them but also, many have them because they mean something to them personally. A schoolfriend was 11 years old when her grandmother (Rose) passed away. When she was older, my schoolfriend got a sweet little rose tattoo placed high on her shoulder. All these years later, the tattoo still looks good and, she once told me that, her only regret is she didn't have a bigger one done🌹

My beloved great-aunt, born in 1894 and the most proper of all women had a beautiful heart tattooed on her upper arm . Apparently she got it in her late teens.

I wished I had asked her about it. I'm sure there must have been a humdinger of a story about it.
Wow! your great-aunt must have had a story to tell. :)

Well, the tattoo said "Babe" in the center of the heart. I'm not sure who "Babe" was.

She was married at 14, a mother at 15, didn't live with her husband much longer but never divorced.

She owned her own car when few women even drove. Not much formal education to speak of, but went to college in her 70's.

As I said, she was very dignified, dressed like British royalty, had the most gorgeous lacy underwear I've ever seen and took no sh!t off anyone.

She was a lot of fun to be with but heaven help you if you broke one of her "rules". She was very disapproving of my whistling and wearing jeans to the dinner table.

I can understand a memorable experience. Get a charm, bracelet. No, they get a brand which as years pass may not be so memorable. Now they have to get it removed???????
Tattoos give the impression of forever, whereas life proves otherwise. We move on, we change. There is the tattoo, at at this point we want gone.
Understand to some degree but would offer caution regarding impulsive actions.
Just my thoughts

Sorry but I'm seeing too many young mothers painted if you will with tats. What do they tell their kids when they start asking about them. I also see the same women, the mothers with piercings. If one is having children wether tats or designer clothing isn't time to ease up on the fashion statements.
Well they tell their kids they have a tattoo when they start asking, why would that be an issue??

And, no, mothers don't stop being real people when they have kids - if they are interested in fashion why shouldn't they keep doing so??

Yes, a person's name...bad idea!

My husband has my name and the names of his daughters, he doesn't find it a bad idea

Nor is he starved of attention or any of the other mind reading reasons posters have ascribed to other people who have tattoos.

If you don't like tattoos don't get any. I haven't either.

But the huge generalisations on here are a bit bizarre.
