Teacher Drags 1st Grader In Hallway, Fired Then Forcibly Rehired

Yes, I remember being dragged around by the ear on many occasions, but the rap across the knuckles with a ruler usually straightened me out in a hurry... :D

Being serious for a moment, this boy was a serious behaviour problem. He was also unmedicated, which is not a bad thing but there should/would have been a behaviour management plan in place for when he was acting out. Plans agreed between the school and the parents fall apart if the kid flat out refuses to co-operate.

Suppose it was agreed that if he behaved in a certain way - in this case I think I read he was being violent to other class members - then there would be certain consequences, such as time out in the front office. Now what do you do if the six year old is told he must go to time out but he refuses and lies down on the floor? Do you pick him up and carry him kicking and screaming down the hall? Do you stand and wait for him to comply (it ain't going to happen any time soon) or do you slide him down the polished floor to the office?

I don't think the solution was ideal, but was probably the practical one in the circumstances. I don't believe it would cause any lasting damage to his psyche.

We had a girl with severe intellectual retardation that we were integrating into some normal high school classes to benefit her socially. She would wet herself and then laugh because she enjoyed the attention that it brought, being taken from the class to the Home Ec dept to have her clothes washed and dried etc. The special ed teacher knew that she could control her bladder and it was decided that every time she did this she would be removed from class and her mother would come to the school and take her home. She found this a much less appealing outcome and very soon the wetting stopped.

Just looking at the video from the hall does not give any of us a clear idea of what is happening with this child. Perhaps a new management plan needs to be drawn up to avoid similar instances in the future.
