My daughter left a few days ago for a three-month trip to Europe from Australia, so I put "WhatsApp on my Apple iPhone,used it today worked out the 8hr time difference, and used it for the first time to phone her in Paris....WOW was like speaking to her just down the road, and so clear too, Brilliant and no charges either!

I use Telegram (almost daily) to talk to my language partner in Central America. It's similar to WhatsApp. Very handy, and free!

Just curious- the WhatsApp app enhances the audio quality, compared to just dialing her number and talking ?

I'm a big fan of whatsapp.. I use it to speak to all family and friends..

WhatsApp is an internationally available freeware, cross-platform, centralized instant messaging and voice-over-IP service owned by US tech conglomerate Meta. It allows users to send text and voice messages, make voice and video calls, and share images, documents, user locations, and other content

OK, so the VOIP feature must be the quality advantage over the cellular carrier's voice service.

Just dialing the number is a nightmare, she will be visiting a dozen countries and each one has a different country code and area code, prefixed by the Exit Australia code because dialing goes through a telephone exchange in both countries. So to dial you have to find all of these codes.
Whereas Whatts App just click her name and instant connection, obviously is going through the Internet (No telephone exchange)and it connects to the App on her phone,no argument really IMHO.
