Absolutely! Me too. I would do anything for our dogsI guess that is a pretty stupid thing to do but if my dogs were in danger I would have done the same thing.
My sentiment to a T.It was a stupid thing to do. The dogs would probably have been fine without intervention, but even if not it wasn't worth the risk.
I assume this was a black bear, would have to be in that area. Not so dangerous as a grizzly (brown) but still can do damage. In Florida we used to have lots of bears, often in our yard, all black. To my knowledge the only attack that lead to an injury to a person was after a girl kicked the bear (alcohol was involved). But the cubs would make things more risky. My experience with black bears is that they are usually run off by dogs, don't know of one hurting a dog, but again with the cubs that might turn out differently.
I agree, however it is a much less common outcome of an encounter. In my post I was just referring to the local area around where I lived, with lot of black bears. I know there have been a few fatal encounters elsewhere. Black bears are wild animals with the strength and tools to do a lot of damage, best viewed from a distance.A black bear is just as capable of maiming or killing a human being as a grizzly bear.
I totally follow you, Alligator, your post was great.I agree, however it is a much less common outcome of an encounter. Years ago my dog got loose because I accidently dropped his leash. He crossed a busy highway with me right behind him. I ran right in front of a car which was so close I was able to put my hand on the front of the car. The man was furious and scared as he slammed on the brakes.
I did get across and managed to get my dog.
But it was a very dumb thing to do.
