Teflon pans

Grampa Don

Yep, that's me
Do you remember the first time you saw a Teflon frying pan? I do. It was in a Sears store. A crowd was watching a guy fry eggs with no oil or grease. I remember the Teflon was white and they were pretty expensive.

I don't remember white ones, but funny you should say... just last night I was cleaning out a lower and very deep corner cabinet and found a Teflon coated bread pan I had never used. Somehow or other a little potato had found it's way into the corner of the pan and was all dried. When I dumped the potato, part of the Teflon came off with it. I chucked the whole thing.

The first time I ever saw or used a Teflon pan I thought it was amazing. I don't remember the white ones either. Trying to get away from Teflon now, although one big fry pan with high sides and one pot we use for camping is still Teflon. We have one smaller fry pan made of the newer material Gotham brand, that is supposed to be healthier to use than Teflon. I heard stories in the past of people's pet birds dying because they were in the room when Teflon was being used for cooking or frying.

I remember how great I thought Teflon was until it started coming off in my food.

No matter how much it has improved I will always associate it with cheap cookware.

I'll stick with cast iron until I'm unable to lift it! :playful:

SB mentioned the bird and it made me think of this spoof.

I tried several ceramic coated pans, but they failed miserably. They didn't stick, but they warped slightly. This might be OK on a gas cooker, but my cooker has a ceramic hob and the pans wouldn't make even contact with the heating surface.

I use 'Fissler' stainless steel teflon coated pans that have a perfectly flat encapsulated base.
