Thank You !....Blood thinners ?

First off I'd like to thank everyone for all the well wishes on my heart stent procedure tomorrow....it really means a lot.

So the doc has said for me to lay around and take it easy for a week or so after the procedure so looking at the calendar I saw that I had an appointment for a routine dental cleaning scheduled for this coming Mon. so I called them to reschedule and as soon as I mentioned that it was because of stents she said that she would cancel my appointment entirely and wouldn't make a new one until they contact my cardio doctor and when I ask why she said because of the blood thinners that he'll automatically put you on after the procedure....which was news to me.

So to verify I called my drs. office and they said that yes you will be put on blood thinners for "X" period after the stents are placed.

I've never been on blood thinners before so what can I expect ?....will just nicking myself shaving make me bleed a river ?

My husband has been on blood thinners for about 15 years, due to a tendency to form blood clots. He was on Warfarin the first year and he did bleed more than normal then. One little cut on his toe tracked up the house before we all noticed. since then he's been on Eloquis and there are no side effects at all.

Glad you're home and doing well!

Not having it done till early tomorrow morning but thank you.

I've been on 75mg of Clopidigrel for a couple of years. I don't bleed excessively but do have the occasional nose bleed. I suspect that Clopidigrel may have saved me from having a fingernail surgically removed after a hand injury. They drilled a hole in it and it released enough blood to save the day.

@IKE, I wish you the best for your procedure. You'll probably be up & around before you know it.

My husband went on Xeralto after he had a major clot in his leg about 12 years ago. He hasn't had a problem with Xeralto. Before any procedure or donating blood, he is told when to stop them & then starts back up after the event.

I was on Eliquis for about 3 months after a small blood clot in my arm that appeared after an IV & then they took me off of it. That was 10 years ago. Even before the thinner, I always bleed like a "stuck pig" when I get a cut or donate blood & have been asked if I'm on anything.

As far as healing from a cut, he hasn't had any problems when he gets one & he has healed up from cuts or any surgery without any issues. You just need to keep more pressure on something to stop a bleed than you may have done before, but it isn't anything major.

I did find Curad Quick Stop bandaids for small things that I keep at home, in the vehicles & my purse. They also make a Quick Stop Spray Bandage which I have seen on line, but not in the stores. I would like to find it.

I don't know anything about blood thinners except that in my having to deal with doctors' adventures, they're always asking if I'm on any blood thinners... I get to say no, you'll have to say yes and then probably have to listen to more instructions and them yammer on and on. šŸ˜’

But I'm wishing you all the best for tomorrow and will pray accordingly... do let us know how things go!

Blood thinners are anticoagulants that reduce the risk of heart attacks and help keep blood clots from forming.
The drawback is though, you cannot take most common over-the-counter nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or aspirin for her osteoarthritis pain because these medications significantly increase the risk of dangerous bleeding, especially in the digestive tract when combined with blood thinners. Worth knowing if you were previously taking any pain killers for osteoarthritis.

My wife has been on blood thinners since her heart surgery last year, for pain relief she takes temazepam, brand name examples: Restoril, Normison, is a prescription only schedule IV controlled substance to the benzodiazepine class of drugs.

My father is on Xarelto for atrial fibrillation.

no side effects other than tendency to bruise more

is common practice for blood thinners to be temporarily stopped a few days before elective surgical or dental procedures

I ended up having to have two stents one in the LAD artery and one in the RCA artery yesterday morning....from the time they started working on me till they rolled me out the door took just a tad less than ten hours.

I still have a compression bandage covered by what looks like clear tape covering the groin incision that we are supposed to remove mid this morning and a prescription for Brilinta (not sure of the mg yet) was called in to the Walmart pharmacy that we'll pick up as soon as they open this morning at 9:00.

Thanks again for all of the well wishes.
