After dad passed in the spring on 1983, my mother's youngest brother started inviting mom and I to his home for the holiday. He passed in the summer 1997. After that the invitations stopped. I guess his wife didn't want to bother for relatives by marriage. Then mom and I started going to one of those public diners like churches serve. Nice, but they didn't give out seconds or any to take home for a later meal.
In 2006, my mom was days away from passing (but I didn't know that at the time) and she didn't feel like going out, so I ordered two dinners to be delivered to us from the county meal service. They never materialized, so I went out and got two dinners and brought them home. That was the last thing I did for mom. Two days later (Saturday) she was gone.
BTW - If you wondered why the meals were never delivered - I eventually called the county and was told that "we didn't qualify". Why didn't they say that when I first called?
