Thanksgiving mistakes

I was watching a cooking show on TV the other day and the host was elaborating on the most common mistakes made when preparing Thanksgiving foods. I can add one - the biggest mistake is not getting invited out.

Last time we were invited out, the hostess prepared an entire German meal. Not a turkey in sight. Now, she is a great cook, and the food was good. Just did not seem like Thanksgiving.
Not really a mistake, but I remember the first time I prepared Thanksgiving dinner without mom around (she and dad went to Arizona to visit my aunt and uncle). Mom wrote down specific directions for her stuffing. When I cubed up the bread, and compared it to the fixings I put in the stuffing..and was sure there was WAY too much bread. So I called my mom. 9am New York time. SHE, remember was in Arizona. Never lived that down. By the way, the stuffing turned out fine, and fit in the bird nicely.

If I'm invited out, I bring a dish to share, usually a winter squash casserole, that way I know I'll have some. I just have to have winter squash as a side for Thanksgiving.

Yes, I always make it, even though I do not like it. My husband loves it, as do my guests.

My hubby has to have creamed onions for Thanksgiving. I grow the onions myself and put them in pound packages and freeze them. One year I made the cream sauce as usual and I guess I thought I fully cooked the onions when I froze them, but instead I had just blanched them. I dumped them in the sauce and just heated them up to serve. They were as hard as bullet, impossible to eat. Hubby had to wait until the following day to have his onions, which were just fine once I had put them back in the oven, sauce and all, for about an hour.

The first time I ever made a turkey alone, I left the little packet of giblets inside, but I think this is a pretty common mistake for newbies. We like creamed spinach for Thanksgiving or any special meals.
