That's not what happened.

I talked with an old Navy buddy I haven't heard from in 50 years. We got to talking about the old days, and the funny things that happened. Well, he got everything wrong. That's not what happened. And for some reason, he was the star in all of his stories. Of course, that's not what happened. I said the funny stuff. His mind must be going because he got everything wrong. Thankfully, I remember things as the actually were. 🤔

I wonder if he said the same about you... when he got home

I see the problem. In your narrative, at no time did either one of you use the official US Navy sea story preface "now this is no shit". Had either of you taken this precaution while relating your story the hearer would have been mandated (by the UCMJ and Navy tradition) to immediately believe what you related no matter what he thought he heard or saw.

My buddy was my roommate for a year, so while we didn't raise our right hand, and recite
"now this is no shit", per regs.; it was understood there'd be plenty of it.

My daughter sometimes relates things back to me in her memory from childhood, and it's almost completely different to how she's remembered it.
I often think to myself, but it was only a few years ago, how could you forget the way it really was already?

I knew a guy from 6th grade through graduation, and he was always a little weird. He was playing "vampire" on the playground at recess and actually bit my sister on the neck hard enough that she got scared (she was in 5th grade).

He went into the service, and I'm pretty sure he "got out early" after not even 2 years. But later he told bizarre stories of incredible exploits there.
