The amazing new Swiss mountain train that can jump rail tracks

Combining elegance and comfort with 21st century technical excellence, Switzerland's newest panoramic train journey finally starts on December 11 -- three years later than planned and 150 years after it was first proposed.

The new Golden Pass Express (GPX) will directly connect three of the country's most important tourist destinations: Montreux, Gstaad and Interlaken, a special route made possible by revolutionary new trains capable of changing the gauge of their wheels and the height of their coach bodies.

What's the big deal about being able to switch from narrow gauge to wide gauge tracks and back again without stopping? I mean, it saves the hassle of the passengers having to transfer to other trains when the tracks change gauges... well, that is a big hassle, so that is a great invention for Europe.

Here in the U.S., most passenger trains share the rails with freight trains, and many of those tracks were laid 100 or more years ago! We don't have the ability to build high-speed rail because of all the greed and incompetence. Nobody wants to do anything for the good of the country any more. It's all about money, here. Making money is all that matters here.
