The average hourly rate of pay for a Police officer in Louisiana is $15.90 per hour.

For comparison, UK police salary list (official figures from the Police Federation)

Constable pay scales
Correct me if I am wrong, but are those pay rates up to date in 2024 ?. I see the year 2013 being quoted ?? Surely in the 11 years, since 2013, the rates of pay have been increased ? Could you clarify this, please ? JimB.

If you are a teacher or a police officer I applaud and respect you. There are some bad ones, as in any profession, but there are also unsung heroes that are worth their weight in gold.
That's all I have to say.

Thanks very much. It looks like a UK Constable with 5 years of service will earn between 34 K and 39 K pounds Sterling per year, as a gross income figure. As todays rate of exchange, between the UK Pound and the US Dollar is $1.26 USD, a UK copper with 5 years of service who is earning 39 thousand UK pounds is making $49,140 USD per year as a gross income figure. And of course the UK Police officer is also receiving the National Health Service medical care program. JimB.

I point out that teachers NEVER work over night, or spend their day working outside in a driving rain storm, or a Wisconsin winter blizzard. Teachers never work on Stat Holidays, like Christmas Day, or New Years Day. Teachers never have to work a 10 or 12 hour overnight shift, then go to the courthouse to testify, then grab a few hours sleep, then go back and work another 10 or 12 over night shift.

Teachers are NOT subject to constant public observation as they work in their classroom. Teachers in general work about 180 days in a school year. If you subtract 180 from the 365 days in a 12 month year, the teachers are off for HALF of the days in that year. Should I point out the fact that teachers don't work during the 2 month period when schools are not in session in the summer?

On the other hand, Police are in constant view of the Public, and unlike teachers, Police are required in most cases to wear a very visible uniform while on duty, and any person can lay a complaint against any Police officer, at any time. Try getting a teacher fired for cause, and see the difference.

When I was an Auxiliary Constable with the Metropolitan Toronto Police Force, from 1977, to 1987, I quicky learned that anyone with a 25 cent coin, could call up and make an unfounded complaint, that the officer would have to fight for months to try to get it resolved by management. The system took every complaint seriously, and yes it should do that. But the effect on the patrol officers was to encourage the attitude of "drive by, just ignore the small stuff ".

By the way, as an Auxiliary Constable I was unarmed, and unpaid. Yes I did it because I wanted to do it. I was fully employed during that ten year period of time as an Ambulance Attendant with the City of Toronto's Emergency Ambulance service .I volunteered my time, usually working one or two Police shifts a week , as well as working on the Ambulance full time doing 12 hour shifts 3 times a week.

Some law enforcement departments in that State pay as little as $12 per hour for armed Police officers. Here is a listing of the lowest and highest paying Law Enforcement jobs in Louisiana in 2024. Here in the Province of Ontario the minimum wage per hour is $17 an hour. Imagine what kind of applicants are willing to work for such low wages ? link. Police Officer Salaries in Louisiana - Zippia

Besides the low pay, some Law Enforcement departments in that State require applicants to buy their own uniforms and personal equipment out of their own pocket. I cannot imagine such a thing. The national average in Canada for a brand new Police officer who has just graduated from the Police College is $65,000 CDN which is about $49,000 USD per year, and no Canadian Police officer is ever going to be asked to buy their uniform or equipment, as it is all supplied to them for free here.

JimB.
They're eligible for higher pay as they finish various training courses, and higher yet if they complete some college courses, but US law enforcement officers are still underpaid. Same as US school teachers.

In fact, I believe both earn less than their counterparts in most developed countries.
