I remember, my mother had a love seat/twin size Castro Convertible sofa bed in the 70s.
My biggest complaint was how heavy and unwieldy they were when it came time to move them.
I’m fine with spending the night sleeping on a conventional sofa.

While in the military, guys would invite me to go along home with them, especially on weekend leaves or holidays. I did sleep on a few sofa beds and a couple of them had that darn bar in the middle, which made for a very uncomfortable night with minimal sleep time.
What was best about going to someone’s home for a weekend was getting a home cooked meal. I would take a small gift for the man’s wife or mom in exchange for their hospitality. I never accepted an invitation from a guy that invited me home with him if he was living with a girlfriend. I did that one time and I named it “the weekend from hell.” All those two did all weekend was to argue with one another. She even threw a cellphone at her boyfriend. I wanted to leave, but my flight wasn’t scheduled until late Sunday. Never again.

Sofa beds are so much better these days! They’re easier to pull out and the mattresses are thicker and more comfortable!

This I think could have been worse than sleeping on it.
Moved one from my mom's home on a flyer wagon to a basement apartment, then up to a 2nd floor apartment a few years later.

When I was young there was a sofa bed that you pulled the seat part out and it made into a bed like a futon, but the cushions were fixed. It wasn't replaced till I was a young teen. I did spend one night on a fold out type, but only the once after that I would just either curl up on the sofa, or it were too short, just sleep on the floor.

Oh my gosh... When me and my daughter came to Mom and Dad's back in 2012, I slept on an old fold out couch from the 1940s (my grandparents), It was okay until they suggested I open it up to sleep. (Oh, No!)... It had so much dip in the middle that I got up very sore in the morning! I ended up digging out my old bed from long ago and getting new mattresses. Works well for me and Spooky.

The sofa bed in our RV had a good-quality inflatable mattress hooked into it. It had an attached inflator and all you had to do was unfold the bed mechanism, flip on the inflator and in a minute or so, there was a really comfortable bed. You couldn't feel a central bar, at all.
Of course, that's only as good as long as you don't spring a leak in the mattress in the middle of the night. You know what they say about inflatable mattresses......"When you actually want to sleep on the floor, but you want to do it slowly...."
