The Bette Davis - Joan Crawford "Baby Jane" Feud

Never cared for Joan Crawford. In some of those silly suspense movies that she made late in her life, she seemed like some old woman desperately trying to hold on to her youth. Pretending that she was much younger than she actually was.

I've heard every explanation for the 'feud'' there is.. over the years... but regardless of what's true.. I prefer Davis any day of the week..

I watched a mini-series about the feud during the making of "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane." It cast Susan Sarandon as Bette Davis and Jessica Lange as Joan Crawford. It was pretty good and it indicated that the feud was more publicity driven than anything else. Of course they were both big stars in the 30's and 40's and competed for some of the same parts, but that's just natural professional rivalry.

Our generation tends to know them best for those 1960's horror movies, made when the women were getting older but still wanted to work, but those weren't the films that made them stars.

I love their older films, the great "women's movies" where the female lead was more than just the girlfriend of the male star, as in so many movies today.

Some of my favorites are:
"Jezebel," Bette Davis
"Mildred Pierce," Joan Crawford
"Of Human Bondage" Bette Davis
"A Woman's Face" Joan Crawford
"Now Voyager" Bette Davis
"Flamingo Road" Joan Crawford

Both great actresses in my opinion.
