The cost of giving birth in each state

That was interesting. I'm happy I'm done giving birth these days. I remember when I had my Son after the insurance paid I owed $10.00, seven years later after insurance when I had my daughter I had to pay $130.00.

In spite of all its problems, the NHS doesn't charge for anything at point of delivery. (oops, unfortunate pun). My children were born at home where we had excellent backup from a midwife and GP who was very supportive of home deliveries. (Unfortunately not every area is so supportive) This is fine when everything is straightforward, but there is always the maternity ward for other cases, or where the mother opts for a hospital delivery.

One of our Granddaughters is a pediatric nurse in an area hospital. She says that most births occur with minimal complications, and the mother and child are usually released within a day or two. However, with a population that is increasingly ignoring its overall health, hospitals are getting "creative" in their billing so as to "spread" the costs around.

1983... C-section, 11 days hospital stay for two... $10,000
2019... 5 weeks early, mom had pre-eclampsia, (grand daughter) baby was 2 weeks in NICU... $140,000
