The Curse of Updates.

I woke up this morning, and I'm locked out of my bank app on my phone. After two hours of being transferred from one dept. to another, it turns out I was axed by a lousy, no-good update.
Never mind firing off nukes to destroy a country, send an update. About 6 mos. ago, my phone was screwed up again by an update. I cringe whenever I see "Updating" on the screen.
Do you have "updating" stories/problems?

Yes. I think so, anyway.

The "start" button on my front screen - the button that has the Window icon on it - it doesn't do anything when I click on it like usual; I have to right-click on it, and that just brings up a very plain black&white menu.

I've tried going back to "previous version" but that didn't change it. I tried uninstalling the latest update, and that didn't change it. I tried trouble-shooting, and that was no help.

I'm assuming this happened after an update. I don't know what else it could be. I don't like it at all, but at this point, I'm resigned to just living with it.

I hate, hate, hate updates.

YouTube won't allow AdBlcok for YouTube anymore. I'm watching a whole lot less YouTube and have removed all my videos (except a rant about that and their one-sided censorsxhip) and playlists and am watching what I can on Rumble as a reuslt. I went to watch the Matt and Blonde show this Sunday like I do every Sunday and ads every three minutes for a show that runs two to three hours long and I know for a fact they're demonitized. Then I remembered they're also on Rumble and went over there and watched and enjoyed in peace because, thank God, AdBlock still works there. Keep shooting yourself in the foot, YouTube.

Microsoft Office. I bought it outright for $100 for forever use on your computer. Suddenly I want to use word and excel (only two things of the five that I do use) I now have to pay $150 annually. I couldn't use my word (my unending soap opera!) or excel (my budget and a spreadsheet I created that my daughter's also now using that tracks calories and diet and weight loss and computes automatically what your maintenance calories would be). My darling daughter clued me in on Google Docs, which is where she's using my spreadsheet and has already lost 20 pounds. Okay, so Google doesn't always act wrong.

But, why oh why does Chrome update every other day, ffs!?

I'm filled with dread every time my cell phone updates and hold my breath it will be functioning at the end thereof. I do keep a functioning landline as well. I have never gotten in the habit of bringing my phone with me. Apps that have been removed, I haven't bothered to replace (and, yes, my bank is one of them). I prefer accessing - at least while they still allow that - on their web page on my laptop anyway. Never seemed to use them.

My updates are set to happen overnight. I just have to remember to keep the device plugged in before I go to bed.

I just updated my iPad to 17.1. I waited a while to do it because of a couple horror stories I heard about it. Every thing seems to be okay and haven’t seen any problems yet. I haven’t done my iPhone yet.
I signed up for the beta on all my devices, so we have more updates than just the regular iOS updates, and we have not had any problems, @Pappy . I always do mine right away when I see an update is available.

I set our Windows 10 computers to have us initiate updates. So far (years, now), no problems.

One time, mine kind of lagged; was taking a l-o-n-g time to complete the update. So I ... rebooted (manually shut it off and started it again). Daring, eh? But it completed the update and was fine.

ADDED: These are Dell computers. Not sure if that makes a difference, but we'll keep buying them. Their service is great.

How odd..maybe it's just the USA because my adblocker is working perfectly well on Youtube

I’ve had a number of tablets and apps on them that were formerly working well become dysfunctional to the point that they simply could no longer even accept “the latest update,” meaning that you can no longer use the app in question, and ultimately the tablet as well as it progressively becomes unable to run the majority of applications that you want to use. It’s all part of planned obsolescence, and you’ll be going to the store to replace something three or more years old that is hopelessly outdated but not worn out…😩

Hate this..I bought my first iPad in 2015….it is only useful now as a radio and kitchen timer.
The second one I bought is going that way…it no longer plays you tube on the app as IOS 12 is as far it will go.
My current iPad is running IOS 16 something and it’s not getting updated as long as my apps keep working.

Along with this we have option settings that seem to multiply like roaches over time. Some of them you may recall seeing or fiddling with but no longer be able to find again. You try Gargling for help and only get weird instructions for Version X.Y that you don't have, no help because the crap gets rearranged each version.

I welcome updates on my Android phone, security is crucial to me. My computers all run Linux, every week or so I give them a Terminal command to check for/download and install updates.
I just do frequent scans. Quick scans daily and full scan weekly. I have auto updates turn off and just likewise check for updates - though I tend to be reluctant to do them until I'm forced. I'm of the if it ain't broke, don't fix it mentality.

This! A year ago, I had to replace my much loved Toshiba Satellite that I'd been using for 10 years. I knew I was running against the time of planned obsolence allowance. What ticks me off tho is it wasn't that the computer wore out.

First numerous warnings from Microsoft that they soon wouldn't be supporting their Office products on that old a machine which I ignored with thoughts in rather colorful language. Then Chrome update that I had ignored pushed itself through - and disabled my computer, made it unusuable. You couldn't even turn it back on. I am still steaming about this. What right did Google have to completely disable my computer?

Fortunately, fam was up next day and trip to Walmart's and new laptop bought. My grandson and son-in-law (daughter knew better) were annoyingly trying to sell me on all I needed was this grandma minimal thing. No, no, no, I protested. I want the best and I can afford to pay for the best.

It is the best they tried to say and I thought bullsh-- but quietly pretended to study the utterly blah are they kidding me grandma computer they insultingly thought would do me for a little over $100. (I knew it had to be garbage for that price. I'd paid $1,000 for the Toshiba.) My daughter whispered stand up for yourself then Mom; I told her watch and learn. You could see her think oh this is going to be good as she shut up.

Sure enough. They both wandered over to the "gaming" computers and fixated on one. I was on that like white on rice, oh, what do you like about it? Fast internet speed, above-par video card, all the bells and whistles. That's it I said. That's the one for me.

You don't need all that, they said, you don't game. I said excuse me but why wouldn't I want all that. I watch a lot of videos. Of course, I want good video card and fast internet and all that. But it's $1,000 they said. I said and your point is? You do know I paid that for the Toshiba ten years ago and I retired 13 years ago? With their constantly trying to talk me out of it, up to the cash register I went with that and my debit card.

I love my Red Dragon and I admit Windows 11 too. Ironically, grandson's afraid to upgrade to Windows 11 and I'm the one who keeps telling him, no, do it. It's terrific. You're going to love it. I only hope the Red Dragon lasts 10 years - even though I don't expect to. We'll see which of our planned obsolescence runs out first. Hopefully, the computers. If only so I get to see if the grandson and son-in-law learned their lesson.

That's so true!

A few months ago when I was getting ready for a colonoscopy an update on my phone prevented it from working to make phone calls for the rest of that day, then the next morning the phones at the pharmacy were down and so I went to the store and they manually checked and said they hadn't received the colonoscopy-prep prescription, so then I got hold of the doctor's office and they said their system was having issues. I suspect all of it was related to the same update!

There is a trick to that that might help you with the old iPad, @Furryanimal . Once the iPad iOS is so old that they will not let you download more apps, there is a way around that will let you update or download some apps.
When you go to the App Store, go to your apps (has your picture, top right corner usually, or says My Apps), and it will show you apps that you have purchased on any of your iPads. From the already purchased apps, you can often download apps that won’t download the regular way.

Next, try to download the app you want on your older iPad.
It will first tell you that you can’t because the app is out of date ; but then it should give you the option to download the last available version of that app onto the old iPad.
This way, you can install many of the apps onto an older iPad that you can’t do if you just go to the app store and try to download them, like you can if you go to the “already purchased “ apps and then try to download the app from there.

That does work with some apps..but not all of them.
I’ll try the already purchased but I can’t help thinking this is deliberately done to make us buy a new product every few years.
But obsolete after eight years? Shouldn’t be allowed.

I've got to go out to the dentist shortly... but I'll try and remember to check my Ipad when I get back because mine is very old and as far as I know everything still works fine

Updates can be vexing. It took me a while to realize that updates rarely, if ever, provide an improvement in the user experience. I went to Android phones instead of iPhones when I realized that updates to the iPhones were continually degrading their performance. Android updates are annoying, but they don't seem to degrade performance. They will, on occasion, change some of the settings. An example is that two Android updates turned off the ringer on my phone. Very annoying.

"Updating" Windows on my computer is also often a PITA. Even though I have the computer set to update in the "overnight" hours, it often updates when I am trying to use the computer....which results in some very slow response until it finishes.

I go through that ... it seems weekly. I have heard that , that sort of thing doesn't happen with a Mac ? Been thinking of going that route.

I have said before, and I'll say again. We put too much faith in electronic communication. I do no finances on-line. And I will stick with paper just as long as I can.
I often wish I'd stuck with notebook and pen for writing my story and now I've got an email from Microsoft Office that I totally don't understand blathering on about location features and on drive - which I do back up to - drive history and safety features will no longer be accessible. I will have the fam interpret these for me when they're up for Thanksgiving tomorrow but I'm hoping to hades these are not things I use anyway.

This story rambles on and on, is purely for my own entertainment, is finally nearly done at over 4,000 Word pages long and I'm hoping that's long enough to just enjoy re-reading. But I back up to a drive (and a flash drive) for a reason. Daughter says I also need to put on google drive so I can stop paying for Microsoft Office which sounds good (but I know I'm paranoid enough to keep paying and have both).

I went with electronic due to my arthritic hands. Notebook and pen are not feasible any longer. My printer is busted and I should replace but they have me exactly ONE week's warning on whatever this is now.

I really, really need to get a hard copy back up. I also do voice recordings and turn it into a video by adding a pic off image searcvhes chapter by chapter because I'm paranoid about losing my sight but who knows when there will come a time I won't be able to play those?

Why must they fix things that aren't broken?
