The Day the Music Died

I loved the songs of Buddy Holly.
Two of my favourites were Crying, Waiting, Hoping and Peggy Sue.
Great music from the past.

I was 17. I can sing almost every word of all their songs, excepting Valens Spanish. Had no idea what Big Bopper looked like at all, but his boisterous, bragging way reflected the demeanor of many of us young male adults. imp

Oh, yes, The Winter Dance Party held at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa. How many times have we heard about how lucky Waylon Jennings was that he lost the flip of the coin to be able to ride in the fateful airplane flown by a pilot that had no experience with instrument readings. The pilot was taught by the same instructor that also taught the pilot that crashed Jim Reeves's airplane, which was Jim Reeves, who was experiencing spatial disorientation, just like John Kennedy, Jr. at the time of his crash. Did Waylon flip the coin? There has been so many different versions that no one can say with 100% certainty who did what.

I have always maintained that if Holly had stayed alive and continued in the music business, we may have never had the British Invasion. Teens were looking for a new sound with rebellious overtones and although Holly's music did not offer the latter, his music was offering a different sound. Just like with Phil Spector, Holly was an innovator in the music business. His type of music, beat, rhythm and vocal was different from anything else being played at the time.

RIP -- Buddy, Ritchie and J.P.

It could have been Waylon Jennings on the plane, too, but there wasn't enough room so he took a bus. Holly laughingly said to him that he hoped that Waylon didn't freeze to death on the long bus ride...

The thread is a memorial on the anniversary of their untimely death, not a popularity contest.

I guess I was having an brain attack Laurie and didn't "get it" that the thread was a Memorial to them. Now that you have straightened me out on this...thank you for doing so. I liked their music too and I'm glad it lives on in ways that we will always be able to keep it and them in our hearts. I saw a movie about Buddy Holly's life a long time ago, I don't know how accurate it was about his life...but I enjoyed it. I do hope they all are resting in peace. :)

"Give me the beat boys and free my soul, I want to get lost in the rock and roll...and drift away." :love_heart:

Not sure about that. Certainly the Beatles and some of their contemporaries were widely influenced by Holly, but so have been the vast majority of genuine stars since.

Big Bopper was one of the first flamboyant performers and certainly influenced Jagger.
