The death of James Bulger

James Bulger was just two years old when he was lured from his mother's side at a Liverpool shopping area. Security cameras showed two others boys getting James and making off with him. James' battered body was discovered 2 days later on Feb. 14 1993 on a railroad track that was seldom used. He had been beaten and tortured. Sexual abuse was inconclusive. His body had 42 injuries so serious any of them could have been lethal. He was severed from being hit by a train. His assailants later admitted they laid his body on the train tracks to cover up their crime.

Police began investigating local teenage boys who might fit the description seen in the security surveillance tape. No connection could be established. Photos from the security cam of the alleged abductors were published in the newspapers and a woman recognized one of the boys and reported it to the police.

Jon Venables was just 10 years old and had been skipping school with his friend Robert Thompson on the day of the murder. Blood was found on Thompson's shoes and the pair were brought in for questioning on suspicion of murder. The boys were separated and interrogated. They cried but neither confessed nor expressed remorse for any wrongdoing however enough evidence was established to bring the case to court. And in Nov. 1993, both boys were found guilty of the brutal murder of James Bulger. They were 11 years old by the time of their conviction. They were sentenced to be detained at Her Majesty's pleasure.

After just eight years of incarceration both boys were deemed to be of no further threat to society and were released in 2001 on probation. They were both given new identities to protect them from furious mobs.

In 2010 Jon Venables violated the terms of his parole and was incarcerated again until 2013 when he was released. In 2017 he again violated parole when child abuse photography was found on his computer.

Jon Venables and Robert Thompson were the youngest convicted murderers in the history of the U.K.

That was a terrible event, I can still remember it happening!

Venables and Thompson were both jailed for life, I believe,
but life here doesn't mean much, usually 15 years with 50%
off for good behaviour.

Their release date is long past and one of them has become
a paedophile I believe, he has been released and re-sent to
prison, 2 or 3 times, Venables is the name, he is in prison now.

Not only were they released, they were given new identities
when they got out, only the best treatment, loss of freedom
for a few years was the only punishment.

Mike.

I remember this case all too well.
At one point they were going to give these two vile creatures new identities in a new country, I remember praying they would not send them here to Australia.
They did give them new identities, Tish. They had to because there is a "Justice for James" vigilante league who wants to kill them which would make them just as bad as the boys were, almost. It's so tragic.

We are never likely to forget this case ( not that we should).. but since Little Jamie was killed so mercilessly , there's hardly been a week gone by when we don't hear something in the media from his parents .. almost 30 years on...

Venables and Thompson were given new identities after having served their time in what was described as a 'holiday camp ' for naughty children... since then we've heard nothing about Thompson.

Venables otoh has been continually imprisoned on various charges over the years including drug abuse.. assault.. and child pornography... each time he serves 5 minutes prison time, and then is released again with yet another new Identity, and a new home provided by the taxpayer..... because as the judge at the original sentencing announced..''their lives might be in danger if we didn't hide their identities ''..

No chit sherlock ?

Sadly because of that.. some people have been mistaken for the child killers, and Vigilantes' have taken the law into their own hands over the years.

It would have been better to have given Veneables ..a life sentence the second time he offended... and other people would not have suffered at his hands or because of the fact he's still alive.. and free... yet hidden in plain site...

They probably tried Tish, but no other country would have them, I bet.

I remember this case so well, but had sadly forgotten about it until your post this morning, Chic.

I had a house-full of little ones, including a baby and a young toddler at the time, and recall the nightmarish visions that would flood my mind as a mother. It was one of the first cases I learned about that involved such a young child, and it haunted me for a long time.

Just as there are penitentiaries for adults, the same should exist for child monsters.

I wish someone had scrubbed them both from existence.

Thank you for the entry.

Venables struck me as a serial killer in the making during the police interviews which were videotaped . To incarcerate someone at "her majesty's pleasure" is akin to a life sentence for underage convicts of violent crime, but Venables would be 39 years old now and he's still into child porno and abuse photography and I think that should be enough to give him a stiffer sentence.

I totally agree with you, a life sentence is the only way to go!
Do you remember the Anita Colby case here in Australia? Those disgusting creatures were marked by a Judge "Never to be released."
The same should have been done with Veneables, he is a repeat offender for God's sake, are they going to wait till he kills another child? Seems to me that the criminals are the ones being protected.
