The death toll in Nepal keeps going up!

The earthquake has now taken over three thousand lives and as natural disasters go it should be high up on the list once there is a final body count. A big one for California is predicted and I'm glad that I am not living anywhere on the West Coast. I can live with our occasional hurricane and blizzard, and I will try to stop whining about weather events...

The tragedy in Nepal is heartbreaking. I live in an earthquake zone here on Vancouver Island. Sooner or later it will happen somewhere along the fault. It is a large area, and the dice are in my favour that this town will not be leveled. Far more likely to be involved in a car accident or drop dead.

Its a terrible situation and the buildings there are so old and flimsy that they just crumble, especially in small surrounding villages. I really feel for everyone there. I'm also terrified of earthquakes and have experienced a few minor ones, even over here.

I have a young friend on Facebook, who is a treker guide in Nepal. Have not heard from him, nor has he posted on FB since the earthquake. I pray that it is just that they have no internet connections. His father was a guide also, and was killed on a mountain...when this boy was only 12 years old. His life has already been so hard. I so hope he has survived this horrible tragedy, in good health.

I hope he is alright! I have a FB friend who used to be expat here but is back in the US. She often visits an orphanage that she helps fund in Nepal. Haven't heard anything about it yet.

When I saw the initial reports of over 1,000 dead I could tell this would absolutely catastrophic. I saw one report that there is such chaos that they were turning away relief shipments. Between age and proximity to mountains this will not end well at all. Best Wishes to all involved.

Side note. A geological coincidence-A volcano in Chile erupts in the same week?

Peace

I heard from my young FB friend last night. He said the aid that is being sent is not reaching many yet. He said that many are hungry and homeless, himself included. That he does not know what is to happen to him or to many others. I, for one, was relieved when I saw the aid that was being sent to Nepal. Now wonder where it went.

It's very difficult to get aid to the remote villages as they need to use helicopters and they don't have enough. Over 6,000 confirmed dead now.

He is Nepal. Here are some pictures he just sent. Lessung1.jpg This is where he is staying now.
Leesung4.jpgLeesung5.jpg The tents are where the homeless are living and the next picture is of Nepal.

I have been also, AC. Somehow, when I saw this young man's photos it really hit home though. Of course, the arial photo of Nepal he must have found on the internet. At least we know cell phones are functioning....for that is how he sent photos.

My cousin lived and worked in Katmandu years ago. My brother-in-law's brother is married to a Nepalese lady, whose family is still there. We haven't heard how they fared. My sister married her second husband on Gokyo Peak in Nepal during a trek. This is such a tragedy; I can't imagine how the city will recover but the will of people to survive is amazing.
