The Diagnosis...Finally

We finally were able to get a diagnosis on Peter our dog.. after an MRI, CT scan, spinal tap, and a joint aspiration as well as a trial course of steroids which proved to give vast improvement... the neurologist has called it Auto-immune polyarthropathy... the doggie version of Rheumatoid Arthritis. No surgery, or treatment other than steroids and pain control. Who would have ever guessed that.

So glad your doggie is OK. Hope he feels better and better soon. You've all been through a lot, especially him. Sending best regards

Glad he doesn't need an operation QS, but the steroids and pain pills is serious treatment too. When you said auto immune, it reminded me of my dog, who around a year ago was diagnosed with IMHA http://www.pethealthnetwork.com/dog...-z/immune-mediated-hemolytic-anemia-dogs-imha, a disease in which the red blood cells are attacked by the dog's own system. He's been on various doses of Prednisone, Azathioprine, Tramadol, etc.

Of course on the Prednisone, the increased thirst and urination was a hassle for us, we'd keep the oven light on in the kitchen, which lighted up the living room and hallway, to see if he needed to be let out in the yard at night, he doesn't make a fuss, very subtle clues for us with him. I still get up at night for him several times, good thing I'm retired.

In fact this is the first week in the past year that he's been weaned off of the Prednisone and Tramadol, and back on his Rimadyl for his arthritis, we'll see how he does, those weekly blood tests he was going through for awhile were too much.

Having Rheumatoid Arthritis must be very painful for your Pete, too bad you had to go through all that testing for a diagnosis. Hugs to your boy, hope the meds help him with his pain.

Oh yes... He is thirsty and is urinating alot... he is also ravenously hungry.. Right now he is on Prednisone, neurontin, robaxin, trazadone, and pepcid. He went to the vet today and she is stoping the robaxin (muscle relaxer) but continueing the others. We will start to wean down the prednisone starting this Friday, and will keep the smaller dose for 2 weeks. We are instructed to bump it back up should the severe pain start up again. We will be trying to wean him off prednisone totally, but there is a possibility he may have to be on a low dose steroid for life. Eventually we will wean him from the neurontin hopefully, but the trazadone is an antidepressant and a anti-anxiety medication. Pete is very high strung.. so this seems to tone him down a bit. He was on tramadol.,, and rimadyl, but they did not touch his pain.. Perhaps once we get it cooled down, he can be helped by those.

My boy has become very food driven from all the meds. Hope Pete can do without the Prednisone, just one year on it seemed like a lifetime for me and my furkid.

QS, hope your dog finds relief and stays as healthy as possible! Hope you bear with it ok as well. It's so tough when a pet is ill. Sounds like you're on top of things

Trazadone is given to drug addicts in rehab to help them sleep. I was given Prednisone for my osteoarthritis. As you know it is a steroid that should be given short-term to relieve inflammation. It should not be stopped suddenly and it has a whole list of side-effects.

I wish you luck with your dog. Our pets become family members and we try to do what we can to relieve their pain. Sometimes we feel worse than the animal when they are suffering.

Thanks Oldman... We will start weaning pete from his steroids this coming Friday. And we will do so very very slowly. The vet wants to take it slow to be sure his pain will not return.. which was beyond belief... I've never had a dog scream out like he did. So we are all very wary of that. and it just may be that he will have to be on a very low dose of prednisone indefinitely. I sincerely hope not, but that pain was horrible. I'd have to put him down rather than see him suffer like that.

What breed of dog is Pete? ... if you mentioned before, I missed that. I wish him well in his treatments.

As a person who has auto-immune issues, and have taken doses of Prednisone with big flare-ups. . (4 different times in my lifetime) . . it's a god-send and a nightmare at the same time.

I remember my previous neighbor gave his dog who had a hip problem and could not get up on the sofa a medicine with two ingredients in it. I have been beating my brains out trying to recall what it was. I believe it was Glucosamine and Chondroitin. Or, something like that. Any thoughts about these natural medicines?

I've used Chondro-Flex for my dog that had hip dysplasia, good for arthritis too. Those type of ingredients are beneficial for people and pets, including MSM. I've used all three myself, and the tablets did seem to help the dog also. http://www.amazon.com/Chondro-Flex-...7-8492957?ie=UTF8&refRID=0KFFQHE2R7751YDX391Q

Hope your dog gets along without the Prednisone, if it keeps him awake like it did me! I know how much you can love pets. I had 2 dogs that were the apple of my eye. One passed on from old age. The other someone deliberatly left the gate open so she could get out. She always would come home. She didn't that day & it took several years for me to quit searching when we went out. After 3 or more years a neighbor's boy brought her tags to us. Said she had been hit by a car and he cut the tags off. He was a really mean kid and the man across the street hated my dog. She loved people and he was the only one I ever saw her growl at. I am sure that the one across the street paid him to kill her or he sold her. Will never really know, as the man committed sucide and the boy moved away.
