Some members of my family are masters of dry begging, I’ve learned to accept and more importantly ignore them



I have one close friend that I ask straight out when I’m not sure but he is usually just blowing off steam.

I have a neighbor who does this type of stuff and only comes over when he wants something, plus AWAYS negative. Now I talk to him through a half door with the chain on.

Just sympathetically let them know you've also experienced living on a limited budget, and all we can do is the best we can with what we have.
