This is legendary on the west coast and maybe not everybody has heard about it.
I was reminded of it this morning, because I read that the man responsible recently died, at the age of 84 in Medford, Oregon.

The blast blasted blubber beyond all believable bounds.
A big dead whale washed up on the beach at Florence, Oregon in November 1970, Thornton worked for the Oregon Highway Division and he had a "great" idea on how to remove the huge whale from the beach.
and it was all caught on video! enjoy this infamous debacle.
