The food supply is breaking!!!!!!!

Tyson Foods, a meat supplier reports that meat shortages are on the horizon. Even if we do have enough meat, the threat of a shortage is bound to empty the shelves the same way toilet paper has disappeared. I have been wondering about the supply of goods, with the current practices. Years ago, Ford car co. had a bad slump in sales , due to a recession. They needed to cut their work force by 10%. So every dept. got slashed 10%. The problem was they slashed the number of people supplying parts to the assembly line, by 10%, too. They weren't able to get needed parts to the assembly line, cars were going out with missing bolts, nuts and other parts.Plus, all kinds of problems sprang up. It cost them a fortune in recalls alone. I think shutting down "non essential" companies is like Ford cutting those 10% of the parts force. You don't understand what is "essential" until you run out of it. IMO.

I think tyson does a lot of the microwaveable pre packaged type meals. Still tv dinners to me. But when people can't find those prepackaged meats and meals they'll shift to actual raw uncooked meat. Could be a small boom for some local farmers and butcher shops.

My cousin is selling cattle ready for market to people locally because stockyards have been closed. There are family owned deer processing facilities all around so they're processing the cattle for people.

I don't think we're looking at long term shortages unless the Covid-19 second wave is really bad. But I imagine food prices will go up and stay up for at least a year. Supply and demand will normalize again at some point but who knows how long that'll be...

I work part time in the meat department at a very large grocery chain store. We received notification that we may notice a shortage of pork and pork products such as: ham, lunch meats, and most anything else coming from the pig or hog.

Also, chicken and beef are also becoming problematic due to hoarding. We had two processing plants close due to COVID-19 contamination from infected workers. To bring a plant back up to operational is a real job.

We haven’t received much at all in lunch meat from Hillshire Farms. Even getting sausages from HF is like pulling teeth. Oscar Meyer is also causing us shortages. Bacon is OK (barely), but lunch meat is not good at all.

Even the companies that normally run some nice sales have been pulling their ads.

Oldman: What about Hormel? They have the prepackaged meat & gravy or juice. I loved their chicken and gravy but it was gone for 3 years, put back up for a few months and gone again.

As for meat shortage those that have always known their way around a kitchen realize meat isn't the only source of protein

The meat plant closures due to infected workers will most likely occur with dairy and egg processing facilities as well. And some of the vitamins needed to supplement deficiencies in a vegan diet are hard to come by these days.

We'll figure it out just like our parents and grandparents did.

If we do have severe shortages we will probably see a long term shift in our food buying habits even after things begin to return to normal.

That seems to be what happens after any boycott, rationing, or shortage of things that we believe to be essential.

Maybe this is a good time for people to learn how to cook tofu 😉
Rule #1: Your skillet MUST be at just the right temperature to keep your tofu cubes from sticking. Spray your skillet with canola oil. Heat it until it just starts to smoke. Throw in the cubes, flip them, immediately, spray the sides that are facing up, flip again. Brown on all sides. Reduce the heat. Add EVO. Keep flipping, as they get a nice golden brown. Add garlic, turmeric and any other spice that floats your boat, early in the flipping. Great eating, trust me. It's all in the preparation.

You can throw in parboiled green beans, chopped garlic, onions, etc. Just keep that wrist limbered up by flipping the goods, fairly frequently.

Throw everything over Basmati, that's been tossed with BBQ sauce, S&S sauce, Soy Sauce, Vegan Butter, EVO, a little Dill, Oregano, or whatever grabs you.

Break out the chop sticks. Mama Mia! (Wrong ethnicity, I know.)

.. and, make sure you buy firm or extra-firm tofu!

We carry Hormel

Beef Tips & Gravy, Roast Beef au Jus in the meat department. We also carry Hormel Compleats and Hormel Pepperoni. Maybe more, but I don’t know what everything is that we carry. It’s a huge store.

In my younger days, my dad used to feed us sh!t on a shingle or toast, with peanut butter and stewed tomatoes as our main meal. We loved it and never thought we were poor. Ah the innocence of childhood. I still consider both of them some of my favorite meals.

Yes,These are quick ways to use in several different ways. Chicken and gravy was my favorite though and impossible to find anymore.

The link took me to the main page of headlines. I can't tell you when is the last time I bought beef from a supermarket (or butcher). I'm a poultry (preferably Costco rotisserie chicken), cornish hens and fish person. I ditto what Aunt Bea replied.

Seven major meat processors are closing parts of their operations until they can restructure and reorganize the physical placing of their workers. (don't forget Chinese have been eating dogs for centuries)🐶?
