The food supply is breaking!!!!!!!

Tyson has a large presence in our area....dozens of large poultry farms, and a large processing plant about 30 miles away. So far, there are no local reports of any issues with either the farms or the plant. However, there are a half dozen other meat/poultry processing plants in this state which have been shut down due to a large number of employees getting this virus. This is bound to cause some future shortages and price increases in the future.

People don't need meat; they want meat.

We certainly don't need as much as the standard first world diet! I'm not a meat-every-meal person and aside from the occasional hamburger, steak, fish entree, fried chicken tenders had just as soon have a little meat in a rice or pasta based dish if I have it at all.

Dairy ...now that's a different story! Love my grass-fed milk and am not sure life without cheese is worth living. 🙃

For instance, what I'm cooking tonight wouldn't make much difference with the absence of a few chicken pieces. Mushrooms are "meaty", and a good substitute for the real thing.
Other reasons to eat mushrooms: (none of these benefits are in chicken or any other meat)
Some of the mushroom’s anti-tumor properties include the betulinic acid precursor, betalin, which basically has powerful antiretroviral and anti-inflammatory properties. Some harvest this medicinal mushroom themselves, but it is readily available in supplement form.

Stop.Just stop. Stop promoting panic.
I agree. I read earlier today that the heartburn medication "Pepcid" (famotidine) is being studied as a possible treatment for Covid-19. So now idiots are swooping in on the stores to clean the shelves, even though any possible treatment would be administered in a hospital by IV in much larger quantities than the OTC product.

So now a person with actual GERD or heartburn won't be able to find their OTC medication. GAH. People are so annoying. :poop:

I think tyson does a lot of the microwaveable pre packaged type meals. Still tv dinners to me. But when people can't find those prepackaged meats and meals they'll shift to actual raw uncooked meat. Could be a small boom for some local farmers and butcher shops.
Made a senior trip to Sam's this morning..Limits of meats in place, got toilet paper and Kleenex.

Got 6 frozen pizza!!!

In my younger days, my dad used to feed us sh!t on a shingle or toast, with peanut butter and stewed tomatoes as our main meal. We loved it and never thought we were poor. Ah the innocence of childhood. I still consider both of them some of my favorite meals.
Love the creamed beef on toast

We're at a very critical situation. I've been saying for years that congress needs to step in and regulate these huge, multinational food/meat processors. They have just ignored all of our antitrust laws for many, many years, and allowed all of this consolidation and mergers to happen, and even having foreign ownership.

It's not just the food industry, but nearly every major corporation. If I were King, I would offer any company that brought its manufacturing back here a substantial tax break. Conversely, any "U.S." company which brings in products made overseas, would have a hefty Tariff imposed upon their products. Highest on my list would be Apple....they make their stuff in China, paying nearly Slave Labor wages, then sell their cell phones and computers here for a Huge Profit....and pay a paltry sum in taxes. If someone gave me one of their products, I would probably see how well it stands up to a sledge hammer.

Absolutely. I have boycotted Smithfield products since they were bought by China a couple of years ago. (Even though the processing is done in the USA, China controls that business. (n))

Rule #1: Your skillet MUST be at just the right temperature to keep your tofu cubes from sticking. Spray your skillet with canola oil. Heat it until it just starts to smoke. Throw in the cubes, flip them, immediately, spray the sides that are facing up, flip again. Brown on all sides. Reduce the heat. Add EVO. Keep flipping, as they get a nice golden brown. Add garlic, turmeric and any other spice that floats your boat, early in the flipping. Great eating, trust me. It's all in the preparation.

You can throw in parboiled green beans, chopped garlic, onions, etc. Just keep that wrist limbered up by flipping the goods, fairly frequently.

Throw everything over Basmati, that's been tossed with BBQ sauce, S&S sauce, Soy Sauce, Vegan Butter, EVO, a little Dill, Oregano, or whatever grabs you.

Break out the chop sticks. Mama Mia! (Wrong ethnicity, I know.)

I'm not vegetarian but, I don't eat much meat. Not particularly fond of it. I mostly eat chicken and tuna. I like tofu. It's kinda pricey and doesn't have enough of a shelf life to it for it to be a good value for me. It's great in spaghetti!

I'm not sure why this is happening. Yesterday, I noticed my grocery store's deli was shut down. There was no meats, cheeses, salads, etc. The cases were shut off. My brother said that same thing is happening in Mass. ( I'm in PA.)

It's possible they may be having trouble getting the stuff Fuzzy.
The hospital I work at is having trouble getting certain things in so we've been having to do stuff we wouldn't normally do or have the boss make grocery store runs.

There seems to be no rhyme or reason to what disappears from the shelves. In my local supermarket, there have been no frozen vegetables in the case for weeks. Last week, cooking oil was completely gone. (I wanted to get some Crisco.) And of course, all the paper products and cleaning products were gone.

Yet, the produce aisle was completely filled with fresh items. It looked completely normal. Can't figure any of this out.

Thanks for the reminder @Pinky what a great fill in mushrooms are.....just added them to my grocery list.....I also am giving up all meat and substituting with veggies....we dont know what can become infected from humans, or not....taking that chance is too risky for me even if it gets cooked.
wish I liked tofu but the consistency turns me off, ewww.....

Beans are back in full stock everywhere. Not sure if after people started panic buying they realized that they're actually used to eating beans.

Hubby and I follow a whole food plant based diet, so lots of beans, tofu, whole grains, whole wheat pasta, nuts, and plenty of produce.
No meat and only rarely dairy, so the early run on beans and rice really caught my attention.

I've never had a problem getting tofu. Have 6 containers in my garage refrigerator right now. We go through about 3 per week. Their expiration date is in early June, so no worries on that score.

I've never purchased tofu and have only eaten it in restaurants. Is it possible to freeze it?

Beans (various colors), brown rice, barley, broccoli, celery, carrots, fresh baby spinach, watermelon. From the freezer case: strawberries, blueberries, mango chunks. "DAK" brand canned ham, "Season" brand sardines (product of Morocco), almonds, walnuts, cashews, free range organic brown chicken eggs, oat bran, olive oil.........all these and various supplements constitute my diet. I consume them in alternating combinations that make up my three daily meals. It seems to work for me. But I'm alone. I'd be a little nervous asking any guests to join me in my dietary regimen.

Ahhh, most of us could stand to lose a few pounds. dhUOuPYZcZvGXGxpJZZV.gif

But I'm concerened about sliced deli meats like black forest ham and rare roast beef disappearing. Driving up price?. I think I will venture out to a real supermarket tomorrow or Wed.
