On a serious note. Lunar comes from the Latin word luna, meaning moon. The Roman goddess of the moon is called Luna There are lunar eclipses, a lunar calendar, lunar tides, and lunar orbits.

The term "lunatic" derives from the Latin word lunaticus, which originally referred mainly to epilepsy and madness, as diseases thought to be caused by the moon.

Yes I knew about those things. I've noticed Luna is being used as girl's names these days. I think it's pretty.
 
Just a quick thought...

The Moon is strongly associated with a female deity and perhaps some kind of worship of that goddess...

So, if later (patriarchal) societies used negative words like 'lunatic' could that have been connected to a spiritual or religious rivalry, a putting down of pagan beliefs — blatant misogyny, even? This may be more in @Gaer 's area of expertise perhaps..
