The futuristic vision of Elon Musk and the economy.

6. New commune-like systems can be created: a tiny private living/sleep room with community laundry, mess halls/kitchens and entertainment facilities.
That would definitely be the most efficient way for people to live. For it to work, everyone would need to contribute to the commune in some way, whether that would be to raise crops, manufacture something, perform some kind of task that benefitted the community, building maintenance, tech work, provide some kind of entertainment, etc... If there was no work requirement, there would be a lot of freeloaders and the commune would fail.

In theory, this could be a game changer with consumer prices and imports. Currently, things cost considerably more in the US because wages are much higher here. However, if robots are doing most of the work in factories, then the products produced should be fairly equal because, unlike human labor, a robot's operation is close to the same in either country. If we can produce goods almost as cheap as China, then whatever slight advantage they might have would evaporate due to shipping costs.

If that were to happen, it would be a devastating blow to China because so much of their economy is built on cheap exports. Following that train of thought, so much of what we import from them could be made in the US at or near the same price, which would bolster American industry. This could level the playing field and make us competitive, especially if energy becomes abundant and cheaper through new technologies.
