So, not so "far-fetched"
Well, the Vatican operates on a whole different level of "far-fetched." 55 years later, and the Pope is the only one still driving one. I think it's safe to say, "This was an idea that didn't really catch on."
 
Now Wonder Woman had an invisible plane, which is about in the same category of weirdness, especially since Wonder Woman herself could fly. I gather that the plane (later updated to a jet) was used primarily for long distance jaunts, especially when passenger transports were required…
