The Good Old Drive-ins

When I was a youngster, we had one of these just outside of town. Now, they are a rare breed. Pay for one or two and park, open trunk, and let your buddies out.

If you went to get popcorn, they was always a lot of cars with steamed up windows. :). Lots of fun and life's lessons learned. All part of growing up at a great time in the fifties. :sentimental:

I loved going to the Motor Movie on the weekends, also. I went with my parents, so we didn't have anyone stuffed in the trunk, but I heard all the stories of the cars that did that. Of course, on the Dollar Nights, then it didn't matter now many people were in the car, and everyone just rode in the seats.
We had the little speakers that hung off the side of the window, and Mom said it was too loud, and the rest of us could barely hear it, so then we started finding the spots where the speaker was on my Dads side, and then everyone could hear.
Intermission meant we had a can of chocolate milk, called a "Hot Toddy" , and of course, we all had to have a hot dog with all the trimmings.
By the time I was older, they had closed down, but it was one of my favorite things when I was growing up.

I love drive-ins!!! One of the first movies I saw at one was 'Mutiny On the Bounty''. Never tried having people in the trunk, but remember having so much fun, nevertheless!! There might still be a drive-in in a nearby town; not sure if it's still open, but was a couple years ago......

My girlfriends always kept me warm . . .

Here in SE Florida we actually had an air conditioned drive-in theater!

They had a huge A/C unit in the back and they ran 3-4 inch pipe throughout the lot and each station had a combo speaker - A/C window unit with a flexible hose for the A/C. It actually worked but over time many of the hoses became leaky and they finally just shut the A/C unit down. It sure was "cool" while it lasted!

How fun. The hubby and I were talking about drive-in theaters while watching The Exorcist, last night.

I know those two topics don't seem to go together, but I saw the Exorcist at a drive-in, and it was probably the creepiest thing I've ever experienced.

The moon rose just behind the screen. It was one of those unusually large, orange moons that you see every once in a while, that seems to get bigger as it rises. The movie started once the sky was pitch black, except for that huge moon.

The movie started without any advertisements enticing people to buy snacks. No one even walked by the cars during the movie, to go to the bathroom or to get snacks. I think people were petrified in their cars because it was obviously hippie night, if you know what I mean, and I bet there were a lot of "altered" mental states sitting in their cars.

When the movie ended, the screen just went black. It was dead quiet. No one even started their engines.

Then....
The movie started again!

Folk couldn't get their cars started fast enough and there was a traffic jam getting out of the lot.

My husband at the time, had been raised in a Catholic household and was absolutely freaked out by the movie, and had to fling the door to our apartment open and check every corner for "things", while I hid in the bathroom so he could not see me laughing my ass off. It was great!

I do miss drive in theaters!

My friend and I had plans to see the exorcist, but at the last minute, we both chickened out. That is one movie I will never see....way too creepy for me.

My father used to take us to a drive-in movie now and then, and we loved it, although I was usually asleep before the movie was over, remember being carried into the house. Great memories here too, thanks Pappy! :peaceful:

Yes! You've just given me memories of wearing my pajamas to the drive-in as a little guy because I, too, would soon be asleep and carried into the house.
