The Grand Parent Scam-Desperate Call From a "grand child"

WhatInThe

SF VIP
Recently answered the phone in which someone tried pulling the 'grand parent' scam. I didn't recognize the voice so I asked who they wanted again, they gave the right name but hung up immediately.

What puzzled me is how did they even know to attach or get a phone number with a senior in the house.

And yes caller ID helps but I answered on a convenient old Ma Bell issued phone with no caller ID. 'Private Caller' with no phone number showed up the phones with caller ID.

This is an older scam but has resurfaced.

Long story short be aware of any vague calls from your 'grand children'

I get the same call once or twice a week, "Hello, this is (name changes) calling from your bank concerning your credit card...." I don't know what comes next, because I hang up at that point.

It was great before when I never got spam calls on my cellphone. I've signed up for the cellphone do-not-call list, but it doesn't seem to be doing any good.

The DO NOT CALL lists don't work for me. Last year, without my readers close by, I took a call and almost dropped the phone when he identified himself as my grandson. Hearing those words completely blocked out the Nigerian accent, but I still slammed down the phone. My only grandson had died 2 months before.

After being harassed on my land line for years by telemarketers, aren't we all?, I contacted my cable company about this particular call. Not sure if there is normally a charge, but they put an end to all of them. After one ring, it advises the caller my phone does not accept sales calls. I'm not sure how it detects that, other than coming in from out of the country, but it does a great job. I've learned not to pay attention until the 2nd ring, and am ever so grateful. I don't get decent reception on cell in my condo, so all calls go into voice mail and easy to delete.

Well, that one's easy. I live in a community for people 55 and over, so all they have to do is look at your address.
