The head coach of an NBA team arrested for organized crime/gambling ring ties

I also heard that this was going on for years and then I also heard something about the Mafia running poker games and tied it in with the illegal NBA gambling. There were people talking while they were explaining this on tv and I couldn’t hear everything. The FBI is continuing to investigate the charges.

Apparently they used alot of tech including x ray poker tables, card reading poker chips and contact lenses to rig poker games.

X-ray tables, hidden cameras: The tech in rigged poker games linked to the mob and the NBA

Good thing the feds found out before one the players.

Also reports that at least one game was thrown by Miami's Terry Rozier

The exact moment Terry Rozier allegedly threw game for $200k
It definitely wasn’t on the up and up. I wouldn’t be surprised if Charles Barkley lost a bunch of money playing poker. I don’t know if names of victims will be released or not.

I'm not sure why this type of event holds any surprise. When sports gambling was legalized, which I personally don't participate in or condone, I felt that is was inevitable. Even with the vast monies paid to sports professionals the lure of risk is just too great. Perhaps a bit of karma in this area is in its best interest. I care more about the travesty of billionaire franchise owners having their enterprise subsidized by cities building arenas and stadiums. The argument that municipal revenue benefit, to me is just smoke and mirrors.

Have to wonder who the victims knew or hung out with to get in those games. What sort of 'business' might they already might had with these people

I have a Roku tv in my den. This morning at 6:30, there was a full half hour of gambling sites they were advertising. A lot of sports betting is going on that’s for sure. I don’t understand why we need so much gambling in our country.

Most states have casinos, many or most states have lotteries, some states have horse racing with betting windows, many online gambling sites and what else can we offer to the public to take their rent or mortgage money, food money and utility bills money? I knew Marines that were spending half of their pay on sports betting. If you ever go into a casino watch the craps table sometime. Thousands of dollars being taken in within minutes.

I think with all this gambling being offered, it will lead some to becoming addicted.

Definitely. With greater opportunities to gamble comes more addicts and more suicides. Gambling addiction has the highest suicide rate of any addiction. One in five pathological gamblers attempts suicide.
Gamblers unlike a chemically intoxicated addict are sober enough to understand the word 'broke'. Most hardcore chemical junkies don't care they just want money for their next hit.

The problem now with the sports betting are all the side bets not just winners and losers(another topic on it's own)

Also many gamblers know if they win big they'll be treated like kings and queens. Professional athlete especially those not in the headlines all the time want or miss that.

Go figure!!
Corruption in professional sports... is nothing sacred anymore!
Remember the 1919 Chicago White Sox? Remember Pete Rose in 1989? Remember Jake LaMotta threw his boxing match? A lot of boxers were accused of taking a dive. Corruption and cheating in sports goes way back.

Have you ever watched the movie “Field of Dreams?”

Seeing reports of football/NFL players and tv show host involved as well. Wonder if they were using the high profile names to draw in others.

I was being facetious... 😅
Like you've pointed out, professional sports have a long history of corruption...
I'm no longer shocked by any of it. :(

Not sure if any of you have seen this recently, but Las Vegas is on a severe downhill slope and residents are leaving because tourists aren't visiting and hospitality jobs are drying up. One reason that was cited was that things have gotten too expensive, but also that there are now casinos all over the country and a proliferation of online gambling.

I did see something about that a couple of weeks ago Doug.

Vegas was always a very special, and different kind of place years ago. I've been a few times over the decades and I'm not a gambler by any stretch but it used to be cheap and full of activity 24/7. I did notice last time I was there some years ago, it's become way too over commercialized and unaffordable. I doubt I'll ever go back just because it's lost what I liked about the place.

This is clearly bad, but even this is nothing compared to what they're uncovering in Turkish football (soccer to you Americans).

"On Monday, the TFF announced at a press conference in Istanbul that 371 of the current active 571 match officials in Turkish football have betting accounts."

Just madness. But hey, there's money to be made, so people feel entitled to do whatever they please to get it.

If they know and can prove games were rigged, what happens to the dollars won and lost on those games. Lawsuits?
Maybe documented bets in Vegas or online site but in reality there is a ton of off book betting.

And unless the league actually changes the record/outcome of the game would a bettor actually have a right to a refund. The final score is the final score as far as the casino is concerned. The side bets might come with limited liability.
