The Homeless....

I already mentioned the 'mentally ill', I agree they can become addicted, and it is not a matter of choice for them. All other addicts at the beginning, have a choice!
Leave the thread now timewise
As I don’t really think you understand the thread x it’s not your fault x

Why involve the churches? In the US we have about 550,000 folks who are considered homeless, and over a 120,000,000 households. Do the math. Just open up your own home to one homeless person or homeless family every night. All you need is one extra bedroom, or even just a couch. That's not asking a lot is it?

I'm sure this approach would also work in the UK.
I know of a person in Florida who lives in my mom's neighborhood. She's constantly talking about him. He opens his home to the homeless. Every few days, the cops are there. She calls me and tells me about it. Ambulances arrive often. Several people have DIED in his home from overdose. I know of at least three people who died in this man's home. I honestly don't think the homeless people can mix with the normal people, especially if they're homeless because of drugs.

Now buckeye Don’t take the thread to its extreme
It’s all about using the empty churches for the homeless for a few hours of sleep and warmth x

I think you are confused! We all have a right to post what we want. If you disagree fine, but don't suggest people leave or claim someone is extreme. Exactly who do you think you are? Most Britts I know have better manners.

I fully believe something I read long ago: 'Almost anyone who wants to recover, can.'
The reason I believe it is I've known a few people who had longtime addictions who became/stayed clean/sober, and proceeded to create better lives for themselves.

The key word there is 'wants'.. there's no incentive for individuals to stop using drugs, work, or anything else, when they're given everything for free and told they do not need to do anything in their own behalf.

I respecetfully disagree .... Once they learn that this is a place of warmth / food, etc .... they will stay . IMO fight to stay.
And, they'll take over.
We're seeing that here in California. They're sleeping on the sidewalks, in front of people's business's, littering of every kind, urinating, pooping.

These business owners have had to close up shop, as they driving their customers away. It's really gotten out of hand.

Where's Gavin? And, what's he doing about it?

Not only California.

Those homeless need more than a free bed. They don‘t like the reasonable rules that go with free. As I‘ve said before, my son-in-law, a San Francisco cop, always carried a supply of free housing vouchers and was frustrated by his inability to give them away. But the homeless do have a source of support. In 2021 San Francisco experienced more than 20,000 car break-ins, and the homeless openly buy, sell, and consume drugs on the city streets. Between a third and a half of homeless are believed to be mentally ill. Maybe California should open its mental hospitals, not its churches.

I'll probably need to "duck and cover" after saying this- but how much of the 'mental illnesses' are due to individuals putting drugs into their systems? I don't think anyone would be 'mentally healthy' when they're shooting up meth, heroin, etc.

For the most part I agree with your post.. but I believe longterm rehab would be a better approach than mental institutions.

Our church (and the other churches I have been a member of) have several organizations and committees that help the needy and the homeless. Every so many days, they cook meals and take them to shelters. Other times, we do food drives. We have donated money to poor families or paid their electricity bills. We have done other things as well. But to shelter the homeless at our church is another story. Like others have said here, it is too complicated. Those who need shelter probably have mental illness or are on drugs. They may not have taken a shower for days. Where would they sleep, on the pews? It is difficult to "organize" a solution. You can't just leave the doors open and let anyone walk in. Someone will have to guard them, especially if they want to steal or trash things. We have had a few thefts at our church. When the doors are open, anyone can walk in.
The root of the problem does not get solved by providing beds in a church. The root of the problem is our society that has allowed this to happen.
Please Google: Homeless Industrial Complex. Many people are making huge incomes from those with no social value resulting in a financial interest in not solving the problem.
