Human race is doomed if we do not colonise the Moon and Mars, says Stephen Hawking.

The human race must start leaving Earth within 30 years to avoid being wiped out by over-population and climate change, Professor Stephen Hawking has warned.

"I am convinced that humans need to leave earth. The Earth is becoming too small for us, our physical resources are being drained at an alarming rate."
"We have given our planet the disastrous gift of climate change, rising temperatures, the reducing of polar ice caps , deforestation and decimation of animal species.”
"When we have reached similar crisis in or history there has usually been somewhere else to colonise. Columbus did it in 1492 when he discovered the new world. But now there is no new world. No Eutopia around the corner. We are running out of space and the only places to go to are other worlds."

Stephen Hawking is a pretty smart guy but in this case he's so far off base it's not even funny.

Anyone can make a prediction into the future if they don't have to be around when it takes place.

Remember the novel 1984. Not even close.

"We have given our planet the disastrous gift of climate change, rising temperatures, the reducing of polar ice caps , deforestation and decimation of animal species.”

No we have not. So far the change in temperature of the Earth is well within the normal range as the planet has been warming for the last 10,000 years or so.So what do we have.? Less than 1 degree C in the last 100 years.

no hawking is right but I think just a bit off on the timing. the moon is worthless for settlement and mars barely.. I dont think anything in our solar system. currently there is no way we are going anywhere soon.

So, we humans have completely destroyed our home, or are trying very hard to do so. Instead of coming up with sensible solutions and meaningful life style changes to prevent any more damage, we're just going to pack up and find another home to destroy instead? While I have nothing but respect for Hawking this is typical human arrogance.

Actually, it might not be a bad idea for Earth. Perhaps with humans gone the Earth and all the Life forms that also live here might actually be able to survive. Think about it. No more pollution, wars, pesticides, human garbage littering the earth as well as the ocean. Who knows? Clean fresh air and drinkable water might return and plants and wildlife could even thrive much better without human interference.

I agree a lot with many of the thoughts here. I have been contemplating a lot lately on these same subjects. Thanks a lot for posing this discussion.

I realize that my answer may lead to some sarcasm, scepticism, and scorn, but since this is a forum open for all, here goes.

My heart goes out for the decrease in church attendance and I see on the horizon a calamitous outcome of events as I witness upheavals and turmoils in the news. The topsy-turvy hubbub on the political scene in Washington is constantly bombarding us with dire, worrisome events in Moscow, China, North Korea, the Middle East, and especially Syria.

Add to this the never ending “Trump-a-rama”, along with Fox News’ disquieting predictions of the downgrading of our care for the maimed, ill and elderly. The terrorists are infiltrating our border as the refugees coming here are allegedly being infiltrated by ISIS members who plan on doing damage, or maiming or killing.

Our country is seemingly rapidly losing its sanity and it’s Christianity, which is being impugned especially by the so-called educated elite and eradicated from the public sector by naysayers and scoffers.

All these ominous happenings are all predicted! These are the “beginning” of troubles. All we see on T.V. these days is only a distraction of what is really going on, and God is fulfilling His plans for His Kingdom and our destiny. I refer you to Matthew, ch 24 for more details. There is too much to outline here.

I attend church now as I always to keep my eyes on the victory that is promised, even amidst these startling events, and my hope lies in what the last chapter of Revelation which outlines clearly what must happen in the last days. How do I know we are witnessing the last days? Its obvious. If it is not, then your head is in the sand.

Take heart, these things must come to pass, but Jesus said he would never leave or forsake us.

I read a lot on world events, and their meaning in terms of prophecy. One of the best books I’ve read lately in this regard is a book by Carl Gallups called When the Lion Roars. It places current world cultural events in biblical perspective. I could not put in down and reading it was among the best 6 hrs I have spent lately.

How does the explosion of technology fit in? What is God up to in Syria and Israel? Where is it all leading? These questions are answered biblically. I’m reading it again. You need to get it and fast! On Kindle, it is about $8.00 and I guarantee you cannot put it down. You have a choice - you can believe the prognosticators, the scientists, the socialists, etc, or you can believe the One whose predictions, so far, have come to pass.

As far as I can tell the only thing Orwell got wrong was the year. And he didn't miss that by much.

I don't know how it is up there in Canada but down here in the states Big Brother is definitely watching you.

A reasonable time frame to consider colonizing somewhere other than earth. I haven't read any articles where oil or minerals are being put back into the earth. Recycling is nice but not to the scale needed to replenish the amount of waste being generated. Hard to imagine earth's resources not being depleted. Since I'm on the downhill side of the potential of being a Soylent Green product I'll let younger people think about the future.

If you reread the novel you will find it's not only the year Orwell got wrong.

Big Brother is watching you only if you let him. Canada is not much different.

Lots of the earth's resources are being recycled. Take forest management for instance. It's a renewable resource.

Same with power generation from dams.

Oil is not renewable, however, by the time the oil runs out new technology will replace it.

I'm a firm believer that humans have more brains than we give them credit for.

As I pointed out I won't be around to see if Hawking is right. Meanwhile as you point out humans have more brains. The problem with that is the human race is going to have a whole lot more brains in the world to rely on. More humans more resource use.

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — The United Nations forecast Thursday that the world's population will increase from 7.2 billion today to 8.1 billion in 2025, with most growth in developing countries and more than half in Africa. By 2050, it will reach 9.6 billion.Jun 13, 2013

Technology replacing oil? Like what?

Then there is this and I think it's pretty well know what happens when there are no trees.

Below are 51 facts on deforestation

•Facts 1: Forests cover 30% of the earth's land.
•Facts 2: It is estimated that within 100 years there will be no rainforests.
•Facts 3: Agriculture is the leading cause of deforestation.
•Facts 4: One and a half acres of forest is cut down every second.

I like your optomistic way of thinking. Given how mankind is using resources I don't share you optomism.

I like to believe that no matter what happens a few people will survive, the world will eventually heal itself and a new civilization will emerge.

Civilization may be the wrong word, if we were civilized we wouldn't be in this situation.

We had ten years of Big Brother under then Prime Minister Harper. Anti Palestinian, racist. Even our scientists were muzzled. Things are much better under Prime Minister Trudeau.

Shalmar: What is better? I haven't seen anything earth shattering or revelations from the scientists who claim they were muzzled. Have you?:D

Oh wait. I forgot. They are going to legalize marijuana and dumb down the nation. :eek:hwell:

Dumb down the nation? If Canada isn't drooling under the effects of alcohol and "respectable" prescription drugs, I am confident she can withstand the buzz of a little BC Bud.

Ah Shalimar. This is how it works. I live in Ontario. At one time gambling was illegal. They legalized gambling and casinos sprung up all over. I started gambling and became hooked. Was I better off before? Of course I was.

Will more people try that BC Bud that you trivialize that never tried it before? Of course? Will they become hooked on it. Of course. Add that to the alcohol and prescription drugs and yep you are dumbing down big time. :givemebeer:

How did an interesting thread about Hawking and outer space devolve into this mess about politics. IDK. Bickering is endless these days. :(

I don't think so. Just pull the plug on your computer.

Better get rid of your cell phone too. And Your landline. And pay for everything in cash. And stay of out the range of any security cameras which are pretty much everywhere. And I'm sure that's only the tip of the iceberg.
