The life of a latchkey kid

I was a latchkey kid. Loved it! My mom would hide a small present or toy for me once in a while and then call me to tell me where it was. Such fun!

I was the youngest so my two older sisters didn't come home until a couple of hours later. It was blissful being by myself, LOL.

I haven't got the time right now to read the articles or watch the videos provided, but I will.

I was a latchkey kid starting from 3rd grade on.

In elementary school, I hated coming home every day to an empty, silent house.

In middle school, I loved it because at that age, who wants their parents around?

In high school I wouldn't even come home from school for the 2 to 3 hours between when my school day ended and my parents got home from work. My best friend and I would catch a city bus and roam all over.

It's one of the main reason I worked/stayed at home with my own kids. I'd work from 4:00 am to 6:00 am, when they usually woke up; during their naptime/quiet time, for an hour or so in the later afternoon; and after my ex got home from work.

Neither my wife nor I were latchkey kids while growing up in the late 30'early 40's.

Married in the mid 50's, having our 4 kids in the late 50's - early 60's, none of them were either.

IMHO. parental control is most important in a child's early, formative, years. For some families it's not possible for various reasons but I will NEVER believe that children at a young age are better off forming their own behavior patterns unless, of course, if their parents lifestyle is a mess.
