The Toronto Police Service mounted unit has 34 horses who do patrol, crowd control at demonstrations, and perform traffic enforcement duties. About half of the TPS horses are cross bred Clydesdales /Standard breeds. This results in a tall, strong, calm horse, that has the ability to work in a number of roles. TPS horses work for 2 days, then get two days rest. Their shifts are 6 to 8 hours in length , and they cover the entire 245 square miles of Metropolitan Toronto.
2026 is the 140th year of service for Toronto Police's mounted unit.
