SR Merchant Navy Class 35006 'Peninsular & Oriental S. N. Co.' The longest name for a Steam Loco.
Taken yesterday afternoon approaching Arley Station on the Severn Valley Railway.
What an evocative photo, how it brings back so many memories. The longest name, can you visualise train spotters trying to write that down? I can see a small boy in short trousers, saying to his companion: "How do you spell Peninsular?"
The fastest steam train in the world is a Class A4 Pacific, named Mallard. It clocked up 126 mph and has never been beaten. Nowadays it resides at The National Rail Museum in York. On my computer is a photo that took some finding, I really must improve my indexing.
Mallard without it's iconic cowling, seen here at York museum. Is that a mini Thomas the tank on the right?
Here's the same engine in full regalia outside the museum.
