The Most Ridiculous Things We’ve Ever Heard

“Toxic Positivity” is the most ridiculous term I’ve heard of recently. My daughter told me it’s all over social media and she ranted on about it to me because she’s focused on being happy as much as possible.

I get it that too much can appear fake but where they draw the line is the problem.

At the top of my list: "Take care of your body and it'll take care of you." Yeah right. Also: "None of us are ever given a bigger burden than we can handle." Except for those who commit suicide. Phooey on both those sayings; they just don't apply to everybody.

From Google search:. "Toxic positivity is the pressure to only display positive emotions, suppressing any negative emotions, feelings, reactions, or experiences. It invalidates human experience and can lead to trauma, isolation, and unhealthy coping mechanisms"
There is a lot of inspirational, positivity material generated on sites like Facebook. Maybe some people are just getting burned out and desensitized to such messages.

There's a great book on this, Bright-Sided: How the Relentless Promotion of Positive Thinking has Undermined America by Barbara Ehrenreich; 2 quotes from it:

"…In the last few years…the advice to at least act in a positive way has taken on a harsher edge. The penalty for nonconformity is going up, from the possibility of job loss and failure to social shunning and complete isolation.

If you follow the advice of 'positive thinking' advocates and purge everyone who 'brings you down,'…you risk being very lonely or, what is worse, cut off from reality. The challenge of family…or group life of any kind, is to keep gauging the moods of others, accommodating to their insights, and offering comfort when needed."

There truly is such a thing a toxic positivity; a lot of corporations, among others, love to wield it to keep workers underpaid and overworked. The right kind of progress has never been achieved by this:

I've experienced that right here on this board. I also have a friend who won't allow any negative talk in her presence. I can't say, "My latest kitchen appliances are the worst I ever had," without getting a lecture and a reminder that she promised herself she wouldn't be "that kind of old person." Heck, I consider complaining one of the few perks of getting old. Nobody's going to take that away from me.

I absolutely hate the term "friendly fire"!! Who came up with that asinine term?
The amazing United States military, Diva! They also came up with such euphemisms as, "collateral damage." I expect they were the ones who replaced "personnel department" with "human resources." That was something that had me rolling my eyes for years.

A guy actually told me he sprays WD-40 on his elbow for pain relief.
Another told me drinking hot water will give you the runs (diarrhea)

I'm going out to the back yard and howl at the moon for a while..

Isn’t toxic positivity an oxymoron, kinda like jumbo shrimp? 🙀
