Well, given all the problems the city has, the new Mayor of New York Bill de Blasio's first announced priority is to rid the city of the horse drawn carriages in Central Park.
Horse drawn carriages have been an New York icon for numerous years, and there is no explanation of why this is such a high priority to him.

He will be effectively putting a few hundred people out of work and relegating the horses to the slaughter house. Good move de Blasio..I'm anxiously watching to see what your second priority is!

I wonder who is letting these Mayors out of mental institutions sometimes.
The Sydney Mayor's priority was to put bicycle lanes everywhere. Given that Sydney was mapped out along the lines of the old bullock dray tracks, and hardly has a street wider than two cars that one had to be the brainsnap of the century.

She was convinced that 'if she built them, they would come' and then everyone would ride pushbikes to work. She forgot that most CBD workers live around an hour away by public transport and cycling is not an option. All she's accomplished is p*ssing of the maximum number of motorists to get the votes of a few tight lycra clad *rses who take free rein to hold up the motorists who are paying for the roads. aaaaagh!

The average speed of Sydney traffic now means they may as well go back to horse and buggies too.

Who votes for these people?
 
Good idea, it's inhumane to the horses, let's send them to the slaughterhouse. :rolleyes: His second priority will be banning mayo on all publically sold sandwiches, for the benefit of the people, of course! I've never been on a carriage ride myself in Central Park, but saw the horses there for many years growing up. People would delight to take the rides through the park, this mayor, like the last one, has some issues to be sure. :mad:
 

To be fair, there were a few cases of abuse over the years, but I don't think the problem is solved by eliminating the whole shebang.

NYC seems to get the mayors they deserve. :(

Oh, yada, yada, yada...there are abuses of humans in the workforce , too. Everywhere you look something or someone is being abused..These animal rights activist need to kiss my fat white a** and get a real life.

You're right, deal with the abusers, get rid of them take their license, confiscate their horses and carriage and let them flip burgers. Abuse would soon be a non-issue if they wanted to stay in business. There is more to this than abuse of horses, which I'm sure di Blasio doesn't know the front end from the back end of one...watch, the real reason will come out soon.

Boy, howdy...don't know what issues he campaigned on, but surely the carriage horses weren't on the top of the list then. Maybe he could try to work on the issues he brought forth in his campaign that got him elected..maybe the people that voted him in should demand that, and right away.

I agree. I'm not aware of the abuse or neglect cases from owners or caretakers of the horses involved, but each and every one should be reported the the ASPCA or the Humane Society...and dealt with on an individual basis. Eliminating the whole horse and carriage experience doesn't make any sense to me either. NY, love it or leave it...that's why I left it. :p
 
They were saying on the radio that when LaGuardia was mayor and there was a snowstorm, he encourage folks to get out and work together to clear the sidewalks, streets and help each other out. This new mayor is doing just the opposite, ordering people to stay indoors and shutting down highways.
 
The only NY Mayor on my radar was Juliano, he seemed an impressive enough sort of character but then making character judgements from this distance is always fraught with hazards. We wished Obama was running here instead of our local fleas once too.

I guess it's a case of the more you know..... :(
 
I lived through Lindsay, Beame and Koch (1966-1989) - Giuliani didn't come along until 1994, and I was well out of the city by then.

Of the three, Koch was I think probably the best. At least he had the best tag-line - "How am I doin'?" :playful:

It sure didn't take this sleezebag long to show his colors. Wonder how much $$ will be lining his suit with the many sewn in pockets at the expense of people's livelihoods, horses being euthanized and a decades old tradition being cast aside like so much NY garbage.
