What do you feel is the number one problem the world faces presently?

Actually, I've got two. Number one, I feel that 1% of the world's population controlling and oppressing the other 99% is just wrong. Why are the wealthiest allowed to avoid taxes or paying their fair share, while the bulk of the burden is placed on those who can least afford it? We need a more fair tax system that will not break anyone's back while continuing to provide the services taxes afford to us.

Number two should probably be number one. - Division. I do not remember a period of time within my lifespan when people were so bitterly divided over everything, some of it not important at all but probably just a created diversion by those in power to keep us at each other's throats lest we realize that united we could make the necessary changes to fix number one. It's been done before in history, but only when people united for something of greater importance than the nonsensical stuff dangled in front of them on an almost daily basis.

What do you think? What's your number one?

That's a tough one. There are SO MANY serious global problems. Hard for me to put a number 1 on any of the major ones and I think that ranking may change from time to time depending on circumstances.

Some of my top ranked issues would be "
- Geo-political struggles - if it's not Russia it's China, Iran, North Korea and others.
- As you stated, an imbalance in who controls the wealth in the world because after all, money is power and they're both in the hands of too few.
- Climate changes in recent decades, whether man made or natural progression or any combination of the two.

In terms of the division among prople, there's always been some degree of this going on in any civilization. Look at all the wars and civil wars over the centuries. There's always been great division between people. I think it's really been brought to the forefront in America over the past decade or so though. As an outsider (Canadian) that's just my impression of what I've observed primarily through the American media I see/read.
What's caused this increase is anyone's guess. More platforms for discussion of contentious issues (social media); 24/7 access to news all of which is likely presented with a someone's political beliefs mixed into things.

Interesting question though :)

Overpopulation.
Destruction of natural habitat.

And if you want to talk about the tax system, The poor don't pay any, the rich can avoid it, but it is the middle earners who bear the brunt of an unfair system. That needs fixed.
..at least in THIS country, don't know about any other countries, but the middle earners here in the UK get hammered..

The number one problem is humans. Before we came bouncing down the road, the world was doing nicely, through devastating epoch after devastating epoch. As nations, we act like spoiled kids at recess, only with nuclear weapons. Within nations, we are racists, bigots and tribalists, etc., which tend to destroy a sense of community necessary for existence. As individuals, we can be extremely self-centered, etc. I think the only thing standing in the way of creating a Utopia is us.

I disagree w/@fuzzybuddy. In humans we find Love, Self-sacrifice, music: song/dance, the arts, in all its forms: Painting, sculpture, theatre. I can't forget poetry, fiction and writing in general. Last but not least Shakespeare.

That's humanity to me.
Also murder, hatred, oppression, disunity, waste and overpopulation. We also had Ted Bundy.

Happiness is of most importance. Feeling love, sending love, radiating happiness is so important!
Realize we are all connected. Success in anything is through happiness.
Under ALL circumstances, BE HAPPY! FEEL LOVE! Give this happiness as gifts to everyone you meet!

IMO, The number one problem is the absence of this. Suffering is man's own creation. Direct cause
of suffering and sadness is devil. We create this for ourselves. Do whatever is possible to evolve into
God consciousness, into completed bliss. This joy will affect your surroundings and the entire world!
Everything you need is within you.
Higher consciousness means greater intelligence, greater power, greater energy, greater and greater
happiness as suffering diminishes. Each individual. You. This happiness multiplies.

I think, problems of mankind are as though pendulous, acute at one stage and almost not perceptible
at another. Swings back and forth, but unless humanity takes a giant leap toward evolution, will
continue to remain in ignorance and in suffering.

Just my thought.

Did you notice that all these problems that the media puts in your heads are bigger than anybody can do anything about?

Why spend any time thinking about them?

You need only concern yourself with the problems you can immediately address in your everyday life.

You'll always have these problems even after people get elected and laws are passed.

Therefore, the biggest problem in the world is the media who stirs up concerns that nobody has the ability to address. Like someone said in another thread on here....the media can't have a slow news day. When they do, they expand their weather forecast and report on problems that cover areas well beyond where you live.

Liberalism. The idealists have been in charge for far too long, and this is the main reason why our countries are in such a mess. However, I don't doubt that the pendulum will soon swing the other way, and common sense will come to the fore.
It's also true that greed is responsible for a lot of what is happening. British businesses were closed down and manufacturing moved to China and India. Those countries have benefited financially and China is now more powerful than we are.
If only people would consider the consequences of their actions.

overpopulation

Because the human world is already well beyond a sustainable environmental balance with dominant wealth and endless growth driven cultural and societal attitudes and behaviors unlikely to change until utter disasters occur with much starvation and death, when it will be too late to escape a dystopian future.

Regarding who pays US income taxes, 80.4% is paid by those with annual earnings of $100,000 and more.

Overpopulation? The birth rate in the developed countries of North America, East Asia, and Western Europe is insufficient to even maintain their current population. If they are growing, and many are shrinking, it is a result of immigration from the over populated third world. So let’s at least be realistic about the nature of the population problem.

I believe the greatest problem is the proliferation of nuclear weapons in the nations of China, Russia, North Korea, and possibly the Middle East on one side and the US, Western Europe, and Israel on the other. A full blown nuclear war could decimate, or even eliminate, humanity.

We don't NEED to maintain the current population. We need to let it shrink. Maybe then we wouldn't have to keep watering a desert trying to grow enough food.

Countries like Japan and Italy are desperate, and others may join them. Immigration aside, for a country to just maintain It’s population a fertility rate (births per woman) should be 2.1, or a bit greater. Virtually the entire developed world does not qualify. Take a look …

I just asked ChatGPT that question and here is its response: Enjoy!

As a language model AI, I don't have personal opinions or emotions. However, based on current events and global trends, many people would argue that the COVID-19 pandemic is the number one problem the world faces presently. The pandemic has caused widespread illness and death, and has severely impacted the global economy. It has also highlighted and exacerbated existing social and economic inequalities.

Additionally, climate change, political and social division, poverty, and lack of access to healthcare and education are also pressing global issues that continue to affect millions of people around the world. These problems are complex and interconnected, and solving them will require cooperation, resources, and sustained effort from governments, organizations, and individuals around the world.

Humans. Humans are an infestation on this planet. Our sole purpose is to control and use everything until the planet looks like Easter Island. That was a paradise until we cut down all the trees. We spread like mold on an orange. It's not good enough to have just what you need - you have to not only win, but make sure the other guy loses.

On Graham's thread, @MikeyDude you made a complaint. I wonder, if you never faced that, would your answer above be the same?
