The One Day Of The Year

What is the most important 'Day of the Year' in your state or country?
Here in the state of Victoria, Australia, it's neither Anzac Day nor the Queen's birthday, Christmas or Easter, but "Melbourne Cup Day", (to-morrow).
The fancy hats, the slinky dresses, the parties in the car park, and then the main event: THE HORSE RACE, where millions of dollars are won and lost!

Not living in Victoria I have to say it bores me to tears.

Every TV station is besotted with Melbourne Cup mania and most of it is about what the women will be wearing.
Then we get the same old, same old footage of drunken patrons in the car park where they can't even see the race.

I have in-laws in Melbourne and my husband and his brother go to lots of horse races when we visit. We go later in November though so haven't gone to the Melbourne Cup. Maybe one year.

Many Australians enjoy "going to the races" immensely!
Went shopping one morning when I could see someone waving at me in the distance.
Wearing a beautiful hat, dress and high heels and partner wearing a PURPLE suit my neighbors 4 doors down the
block cheerfully announced to me that they were going to the races (by train!).
Regretfully I didn't have a camera with me, otherwise I'd taken a photo of the happy couple!!

Now Ralphy1!
Please give this some "deep, serious" thought!
Which activity do you honestly prefer: Shooting (with guns), or horse racing (passively watching)?

Totally agree with you, D.W., but I can't condemn 1000's of Australians enjoying themselves.
As a matter of fact, there's even a "twinge of envy" about so many having fun, while I'm home reading Goethe's poetry, or Laura Childs' scrapbooking mystery "GOSSAMER GHOST".

:fun:

I'm not against having fun. As my father used to say, "I'd be in it myself if only I were two days younger and single". It's the very predictable beat up on all the news/TV channels that bore me to tears. Same old, same old. Same old again.

I get the identical reaction to Oscars events, the Logies and various football presentation events. Banal in the extreme but they don't go on all day. I guess it's the problem of live TV. Edited highlights would be enough but live TV leaves the presenters scratching for something to talk about as they struggle to fill the time.

Here in the US ya cant beat the Fourth Of July.

Have some wonderful memories of 4th of July celebrations, Davey Jones: Homemade ice-cream, potato salad, barbecued meat; the parade; the fireworks!!
Wonder if we will ever see an "Independence Day" in Australia!!!

Can't think of a day here that means much really. In racing circles there is Ascot, The Queens Birthday [she has 2 !] I don't know when either of them are though. St George [patron saint of England] is on 23rd April, but there is no Bank Holiday for this day, and most people couldn't tell you when it is.There is Bonfire Night [also known as Plot Night.] That's November the 5th and is all about the 'terrorist' type plot to blow up the King and Parliament hundreds of years ago by Guy Fawkes and his friends.Another friend betrayed them and they all suffered grisly executions.People build bonfires with an effigy of Guy Fawkes or whoever they choose [maybe the Prime Minister]!! on top of it, and there are fireworks and food.
'Remember remember the 5th November,
Gunpowder, treason and plot,
Remember remember the 5th November,
It never should be forgot! ' [old rhyme.]
Hardly a happy holiday is it?Typical of us Brits.
