The Pope

Have you heard, the Pope in the last few days, has excommunicated the Mob. What do you think the outcome will be? Do you think he is safe? :dunno:

I think the Pope is safe, and has enough protection. I heard that when Pope Paul II did something similar in 1993, there was a little violence that resulted, not sure exactly what it was.

How can you excommunicate a whole class of people?
I would have thought that the sentence would have to be done by naming each person individually.

After a bit of googling I note that he did use the word excommunication informally.

"Those who in their lives follow this path of evil, as mafiosi do, are not in communion with God.
They are excommunicated."
Pope Francis.

Vatican spokesman Father Ciro Benedettini said the pope's stern words did not constitute a formal over-arching decree of canon (church) law, regarding excommunication, which is a formal legal process. Rather, he said it was more of a direct message to members of organised crime that they had effectively excommunicated themselves, reminding them that they could not participate in church sacraments or other activities because they had distanced themselves from God through their criminal actions.

Still, the use of the highly charged word by a pope is significant because many members of organised crime in Italy see themselves as part of a religious, cult-like group, take part in sacraments, go to church and in some cases have also found complicity by some churchmen in the south.

Recently the Pope stated that he was not going to be using the bulletproof popemobile; because it was keeping him away from people.

Quote:
Pope Francis loves people: He loves to minister to them and talk to them about what they're wearing and bless their exotic pets, but it's hard to do those things from behind a pane of glass. So, he has decided to stop riding around in the bulletproof Popemobile intended to protect him from assassination attempts. "I cannot greet the people and tell them I love them inside a sardine can, even if it is made of glass. For me it is a wall,"
