The topic of Aspirin, it's uses, pros and cons, what do you think?

The last info I heard was that it does more harm than good.
Daily aspirin was recommended to me at my diabetes diagnosis 13 years ago. I said, "No thanks."
The previous information claimed that it reduced the risk of a stroke or heart attack from a blood clot - by thinning the blood & preventing clotting.
The newer information said it increased the risk of a stroke caused by bleeding - that wouldn't stop.

I've gone the way of daily aspirin, but noticed it didn't prevent
the buildup in arteries that caused my 2014 heart attack, so i sorta waffle on it now....take it about 3 times a week.....

I'm not sure how the common knowledge that a small daily dose was good for you started, but the latest advice from the medical community is that is may not be the best choice. It may not be a big life or death matter, but the medical community doesn't seem to be supporting it at this time. I'm on blood thinners, and in my case it's a firm "NO" to aspirin because it can cause bleeding.

I use aspirin (when I have it) for pain or fever. It is cheap and effective. When I broke a vertebrae in my back I was told to use the tri buffered form for my pain. And it worked well. If you are thinking as a preventative for stroke talk to your physician. Aspirin works by slowing down the clotting speed. This is the same thing “blood thinners” do. How it compares to others on the market I do not know.

I've tackled this one before. First, I am one of the lucky ones who can take aspirin in moderation. It, along with penicillin, is one of the most effective drugs of modern medicine. Aspirin is a Godsend to arthritics and anyone suffering from a high fever. It reduces dangerous fevers in a short time without fear of shock. It also reduces inflammations to a manageable level. If, of course, anyone who suffers from bleeding issues, this drug is a no-no. Also, if digestive disorders are present, it is also countermanded.

Don't take Aspirin without your doctor's OK. That is the safest route to follow.

The problem is that aspirin has caused bleeding issues.
My dad took it on his doctor's advice. I had to drive him to the ER 3 times for non-stop bleeding in the bathroom. On the 3rd trip, the ER doctor told me, "A few more minutes, he would have bled out & we couldn't have saved him."
We decided not to listen to his doctor after that.

Aspirin is toxic and deadly to mammals, depending on size, condition and dosage.
For example just one or two aspirin will likely be deadly to dog or a cat, and possibly to a human adult.
Fresh ginger root is a much better alternative, can be chewed, added to other foods, or blended with water and used
topically and internally, without the negative consequences of toxic and potentially deadly drugs like aspirin and ibuprofen.

Yes, ginger is cited as one of the best natural anti-inflammatories.

Interesting topic.

I have arthritis on my knees, and especially my left knee, which basically means constant pain. My doctor prescribes Codeine. I have told them over and over, the Codeine does nothing for the pain. They give me a weird look, and tell me they won't give me anything stronger.

So, I tried aspirin and Ibuprofen at the same time. Guess what - pain goes. Aspirin and Ibuprofen works, Codeine does not. I can't explain it, although I know there is a genetic condition that makes opiates ineffective. Perhaps I have that - but whatever the reality, I know what helps with the pain, and it's the over-the-counter stuff.

I read, probably 20 years ago, if aspirin were developed today, it would be expensive and require a prescription. I don't know if that's true. Alka Seltzer used to do wonders for headaches for me. But my stomach can't tolerate it anymore. Or Ibuprofen. It's Tylenol for me now.

I took a daily low dose for a couple of years, but noticed that if I cut myself, I would bleed more than normal, so I stopped. I keep a bottle of generic Aleve....Naproxen Sodium...in the cabinet, and take one of those if I feel any pain.

My mother took a daily aspirin for about 10 years after a heart attack on recommendation of the doctor. In the end she got severe stomach bleeding and died two weeks later.
