The UK wants to serve/execute wire tap orders/warrants IN the US/on US companies(tech companies especially) regarding UK matters. Secret treaty negotiations to basically allow a foreign country to perform law enforcement and/or intelligence functions on US soil.

Here we go again with the proverbial foot in the door. This is not about extradition or sharing existing intelligence this "treaty" would allow foreigners to perform police duties in the US even though for now it supposedly only gives access to US companies.

I was thinking the same thing Ameriscot. We have bugger all idea about what is going on at Pine Gap in the Northern Territory.
Our government won't tell us and I've no idea whether the Americans are spying on Australians or whether they share fully any of the intelligence that they gather about us, even under the Five Eyes (FNEY) treaty.

My understanding is that the Five Eyes arrangement is designed to bypass rules about spying on your own citizens.
America can spy on all the others and the others can spy on US citizens, then share the info.
A handy arrangement for all concerned. From Wiki

Documents leaked by Snowden in 2013 revealed that the FVEY have been spying on one another's citizens and sharing the collected information with each other in order to circumvent restrictive domestic regulations on surveillance of citizens.[SUP][7][/SUP][SUP][8][/SUP][SUP][9][/SUP][SUP][10][/SUP]

I think the US spies on many, including allies.

Not just the Us, we all do it, if only to get an edge in trade negotiations. Anyone who believes otherwise is very naive.

There's been no mention of these reported items in any of our news media, and I can think of many left wingers to whom such reports would be food and drink!

So far as I can ascertain, what they are seeking is entirely legal under your laws.

So it was okay for the US government to tap into phones in the UK and Germany, but not the other way around?

The US shouldn't be allowed either. Does the FBI or local police department go to places like Paris with a US court order demanding a French phone company let them place a wire tap or turn over proprietary information. Intelligence capability is already there. This goes beyond NSA spying because it rubber stamps criminal investigations where domestic police/law enforcement from another country are conducting operations in another country. This treaty would give up country's sovereignty essentially giving law enforcement powers to foreigners. Requests for information or assistance from a foreign country should go through state departments and embassies staying there on a case by case basis. A foreign law enforcement agency/department should have ZERO jurisdiction in another country.

And no doubt the US does the same!

This is not about spying, it goes beyond spying. This 'treaty' would allow law enforcement from another country to conduct operations in another. Now it's limited to wire taps and information. Why should a company in London have to listen or obey a court order from a US court & judge. If the US wants to request a British court issue an order that's one thing but under this treaty a theoretically a cop from the US could walk into a British company in the UK and they would have to comply with a foreigners court order just like it was one of their own. This is about sovereignty.

Right now can a cop from NYC go to London with a US court order and demand a British phone company give them information and access to their equipment/plant to place a device? Right now another state does not even have to honor such a request.

I should think the US uses every trick in the book why observing both its enemies and its 'friends'!

Missing the point. If it was spying why bother with a court order. This also includes criminal investigations. Again why should any law enforcement agency from foreign country have jurisdiction in another. JURISDICTION is the issue here. Why should a legal American resident be subject to British authorities in America. Why should a US phone company in America have to obey an order from a foreign court system or comply with the demands of foreign police department.

"Why should a US phone company in America have to obey an order from a foreign court system or comply with the demands of foreign police department."

Because, if your courts grant the warrant, it is the law. Many might regard you as a pretty lawless society, but by and large the Rule of Law prevails in the US.

This is akin to large US companies paying little or no tax in the UK - it is entirely legal. under the incompetent British Treasury rules.

Don't criticize, change the law.
