The vaccine can temporarily raise blood glucose in people with type 2 Diabetes

I had my shot yesterday and my fasting BG was quite high for me this morning. I thought it was just “dawn effect” or having a little fruit juice around 2am this morning. Am taking it easy, just a few more aches than usual. Arm ok.
But just now took my before dinner BG and whoa! Way high. Hadn’t been doing or eating anything to cause it. Wondered if it was the vac. Looked it up on reliable diabetes info web sites.
and shooo nuff! It may affect people with diabetes this way for a few days. They recommended adjusting your insulin, if you take it, for a few days or check with yourDr or Nurse Hotline.

I’ll be fine, thanks, Aunt Marg. I’ll just raise the insulin a certain amount. It was the surprise that got me.
The same thing happens for a few days when one gets a steroid shot in an arthritic joint and I’ve experienced that, , but we’re told that ahead of time and I hadn’t seen warnings even on the handout from the COVID shot. I just wanted to let other people with diabetes know if that happened & they weren’t expecting it.

Have you managed to stabilize or get your blood sugar level down?

Thank you for this,Geezerette. I saw your post after I had already booked appointments for myself and hubby for Saturday and it made me a little nervous. Then my daughter told me about a young man we know well (played football with our grandson and is the brother of my granddaughter`s boyfriend) He is 21 and a firefighter. Also T1 Diabetic. Apparently he had quite a bad reaction to his first shot but they still vaccinated him with the 2nd yesterday morning. He is (or was as of last night) very, very sick and on an IV at his firehouse. I`m sure that was to get his BS down,so I am hoping he is doing better today.

I will definitely be keeping a close eye on my numbers after I get vaccinated!

Pepper, example, before dinner Wednesday 2/3, 206 instead of normal range of 90 to 120, depending on if lunch was late, activity level.

What were the high numbers @Geezerette? How high were they compared to what you usually are? I woke up with a glucose number of 376 but I did something bad last night due to emotional worries.
That’s me as well, whenever I am upset right to the candy and ice cream which are currently not in our house. It’s so hard being diabetic. I hope your worries are over soon.

Thanks for the heads up.
