It is amazing to me how music can bring back memories,
and instantly I am transported back in time.
The 50's
Moonlight Serenade
As a young boy in 1958 New Years eve.
We had a business. An old store we converted
and expanded with large windows to the street.
My parents frosted the windows, setup card tables
and invited close friends to celebrate the new year.
I hear this song and I can see them drinking, dancing,
laughing and having a good time. Me in my jammies
peeking thru the door. I was probably 10 then.
Mockingbird hill
My grandparents had this old radio with phonograph
for years. I played this record so many times I think
I wore it out. It was the second favorite song with
How much is that doggie in the window the
number one.
Not only can I see them but I can feel the
ambience of the time.
The 60's
The man who shot liberty valance
This song played over and over on the local
radio station as the movie played in the
local theatre.
I first heard it while outside the house and
walking by an open window. It stuck forever
in my mind and brings back memories of my
most enjoyable moments of living free on the
ranch we were renting.
Hey Paula
My favorite song from the high school years.
I can see the kids during the lunch time
dance in the gym. I never learned to dance
the swing step but instead took lessons to
dance the ball room steps. Hold the ladies close.
Mellow Yellow
This song played during my boot camp days
in the navy. Never thought much of it then.
Summer in the city
Sunny
Monday Monday
Groovin
and many others played during the time
I was stationed in southern california.
I can see that base, the ships, the locker room
where I changed into civies. What a time that
was.
Black is Black
This is the phillipines.
Coconut Grove bar

I never promised you a rose garden
Run thru the jungle
Sky Pilot
Vietnam, I don't need to say more
about this time.
There are also some smells that will transport me
back. The smell of musty bedding and I am instantly
back on Guam, and can feel the humidity and
heat.
Because of so many bad memories mixed
among the good I quit listening to music for
a long time. I don't know what played during
the 80's or 90's.
There is noone to share these memories with.
The walls echo my voice.
