The Winter of 2024-2025 was SO cold....Tall Tales....

Thank you all for laughs! and an On my way! (oh, my word) @Paladin1950

You’re kidding. That’s too bad. Should it not be hibernating down south?View attachment 395718View attachment 395719
Maybe it’s an older Hummingbird and knows it won’t make it.

I am about as South as one can get in the US without being in Mexico: Tucson, AZ.

Actually, hummingbirds live here all year around! Even in Steamboat Colorado (northwestcentral part of Colorado, I had 20-30 hummingbirds at my feeders while it was 30 degrees and snowing heavily - they even dodge the snowflakes! I will try to post a photo if I can find it. Snow everywhere, freezing weather and piled up snow: and so many hummingbirds, more than I'd ever seen...but perhaps they were stopping in and migrating from further south..it snows nearly all summer in the Colorado Rockies.

That’s really interesting . If they live there all year around maybe they just get used to it. Our hummingbirds birds leave at the end of August , beginning of September..

Three varieties of HBs nest year around here in Tucson: Anna's; Costa's; and Broadbilled.
Tucson is at latitude 32.25 N;
Toronto is at 43.6N and
Montreal at 45.5N

We may (not every year) get 2-10 days of freezing weather here in Tucson, usually between Jan 5 and Feb 15.
Plus, with the sun warm spots can be found all night for the little hummies all over the place.

We have human Snowbirds by the thousands. Many from Canada, N.Dakota, Ohio, Michigan, freeze/snow belt places. Tucson is a best kept winter home for many less affluent and some affluent seniors. Sunshine you can count on, 345 days a year. Clean air. Lots of things to do for seniors.

I don’t know much about hummingbirds. We only just started getting them when we moved here. We noticed that a lot of people have those hummingbirds feeders that stick to the main window of the house.

We get Ruby throated hummingbirds.
IMG_7343.jpegThey look similar to Annie’s hummingbirds.IMG_7340.jpeg
I didn’t realize how territorial they are. We get some who mate and if other hummingbirds come along they dive after the poor things.
They clearly love the colour red and associate it with food. One day I went out with a bright red top and two hummingbirds tried to feed off me. Lol. It was the weirdest thing. They also make the cutest sounds when they are happy.

I remember the winter of '78 in Ohio. It was so bitter cold that when you pulled in to park at night, the headlights wouldn't go out. We had to get out and saw off the beams!!
