There is “no safe amount” of processed meat to eat,

well that is hardly surprising - well known that diabetes, leads to increased cardiovascular risks
I'm not announcing it... I'm saying that worrying about sugar causing Diabetes being the cause of ALZ, ..it's not the sugar per se, it's those who already have diabetes, whether that was initially caused by Sugar, or not.. the studies state that those with Diabetes, are more likely to get Alzheimers

My wife and I eat no meat at all. Plus, neither of us smoke nicotine or drink alcohol. We only eat fish, vegetables, chickens and fruits. So far I made it to age 90 and she made it to age 86.

Firstly, I'd like to say I wish you many more years with your good wife. ;)

The thing about trying to "do right", is that so much is out of our control. From microplastics in everything, to whatever gets into the air, into sources of water, what falls in rain.... there is a ton of environmental stuff that factors in. I doubt we're able to pin someones death specifically on the amount of hot dogs they are in their life time.

Thus, longevity is something of a lottery, albeit there are things we can do to cause it to end prematurely. The good news is - you've won that lottery!

Many years ago i worked with a mathematician who was skeptical of studies. He might sat something like yes but did they ask how many had eaten clams in the past six months. His comments were silly enough to get a response and remind us to consider possible flaws in a study.

I've never been very impressed by papers like this one that are based on "meta analysis". No actual research involved. Someone pulls together a bunch of data from a bunch of studies done by others, done at different times, using different methods and criteria. They pretty much just jam them into a computer and try to interpret what falls out. I suspect the following is closer to the mark"

Dr. Nick Norwitz, M.D., PhD, a Harvard-educated clinical researcher and metabolic health educator, acknowledged that the study shows a "relatively consistent association" between higher processed meat intake and worse health outcomes, but pointed out some caveats.

"These are associations — not necessarily causal relationships," Norwitz, who was not involved in the study, told Fox News Digital.

Additionally, as the researchers themselves acknowledged, the quality of the evidence was graded as "weak," Norwitz pointed out.

I read many articles about health, diet, appropriate amounts of this and that for optimum health. As I read, I am mindful of two things.

One is that the word “moderate” as in moderate amounts of sugar/processed food/sodas/refined flour etc differs depending on the author, and that the word itself is open to interpretation.

The second thing is that these articles address dietary habits of “normal” people or the average person, and makes sweeping statements referring to these categories. In fact, all bodies are different.

What works or not will differ drastically one body to the next. That’s the primary reason why there are so many different diet fads around, (Mediterranean, keto, gluten free, carnivore etc,) because each body responds differently to food and what will be problematic for one won’t for another.

Back to the article. One sugared soda a day, for me, would be waaaay excessive, yet for many this is the norm, their habitual consumption. I know healthy older folks who eat deli meats and cheeses habitually, because they eat sandwiches for lunch, whereas I MAYBE will eat a deli sandwich (processed meat and white bread) once every three months if that and the only time I enjoy a hot dog is when we have folks over for a cookout.

Moderation for me might look very different for someone else. My habitual diet is lots of fruits and veggies, little red meat consumption, meals without any meat at all two or three times a week, little to no processed food, very limited amounts of white flour products (bread, pasta etc) all of which, along with my regular supplements, contribute to my overall health and feeling of well being, keep my energy up, keep me regular, allow me to function at a level of productivity that I want.

You may feel just as well and energetic on a very different diet, because your body has differing nutritional needs than mine!

No one has yet mentioned two of our most popular foods near the top of the list, commercial pizza (especially frozen) and potato chips. Will conveniently have a delicious slice while on road trips, maybe once every 2 or 3 months.
