There is a flock of Turkey Vultures that hang out here

Yeah, I don't have to venture far to see them overhead. I used to see more of them high over farms, now I see them along highway right-of-ways more often.

I see them occasionally here. Their niche in things is filled quite a bit by the flocks of ravens we have in my valley. Also (and I'm speculating here) possibly also by the bobcats & cougars.

In the past, I've traveled down through west-coast US, and I remember seeing them commonly in northern California. Unmistakable shape & flying pattern up in the air.

They are always flying where I live. About a dozen of them. Just looking for roadkill or anything dead in the woods. They are a fascinating bird to me. Their wing span is awesome. After a rain, they'll go in a tree and fan them out to dry.

The "turkey vulture" (or buzzard) has no direct relationship to the turkey. The T.V. is a vulture. They have a somewhat similar looking head, so I'm certain that's where that name for that type of vulture came from. You could do a web search for the turkey and the T.V. and look at pictures.

I live a few miles from Hinckley, Ohio. Every year there is a celebration called Buzzard day, it marks the anniversary of the great hunt of 1818 when residents formed a giant circle and closed in while shooting all the wild varmints. Allegedly that pile of carcasses drew the turkey vultures and they have returned every year since.

Makes a good story and a reason for a small town celebration. In truth the buzzards are all over this area, once spring hits I see them daily flying and roosting. They are large birds beautiful in flight but sure are ugly up close.

Well at least the "here" in the thread title doesn't refer to SF, right? :ROFLMAO:
San Francisco is in their summer range, you probably wouldn't see them though unless you got away from the city. I was thinking that they're scavengers and most of the people in the nursing home are getting close to the finish line. It's kind of unsettling to look out the windows and see Buzzards circling around.

I can watch them soaring outside the dining room windows. I can't say that I feel too good about them, it's like they're waiting for dinner. All you ever need to know about Turkey Buzzards Turkey vulture - Wikipedia They're big and ugly and do a necessary job.
Did you recently post that you moved into an assisted living facility or something like that? If not then ... my bad, disregard. But if so...
Maybe it's just me but, I'm getting that Twilight Zone vibe again.

wot's the difference between a turkey ; a vulture and a turkey vulture??
As @JBR said, the turkey vulture isn't related to the turkey. There are two vultures in North America, the turkey vulture & the black vulture.
We have both in our area, but we see the turkey vulture more.
