It’s a huge thing now with younger kids. This is some of my 10 year old grandsons’s collection. His 8 year old sister has similar. It’s A Thing, y’all.

What was A Thing for you when you were young?

Hoola-Hoops, rubber-band powered balsa wood propeller airplanes, penny folders (for collecting pennies), silly-putty, Lincoln Logs and erector sets, slingshots, and the Magic 8-ball: "Ask me again later"
As a kid, I was really excited about that magic 8 ball. I kept thinking, "How does it know?"
And I loved Silly Putty. I chewed it for hours. When I was in France with my mom, I saw it in a store.
I remember a wooden airplane that was battery powered. You held the battery which was in a casing & the plane was connected to a wire, so it only flew in circles.

Remember the spinner fidget toy? They were a hot item perhaps two years ago, selling for $5 or more for a “custom” model. When they ceased to be new and novel, they were in clearance bins at discount stores, begging for buyers at a dollar. Nothing ages faster than a novelty item…

I wonder if the creator of these also created posits and fidgets. River's collection includes several more colorful versions of the spinner but withs more arms, and popits where the holes are in the picture

My daughter has a couple of popits. She says they help people with ADD focus, like when they are on the phone. I don't have ADD, but I tried the popit and it was boring.

Yes, I remember those planes! My cousin had one and he brought it with him to our place one day. We played with that sucker non-stop till the battery ran out of juice, which only took about an hour, if that. After my cousin left, my dad said "And that's why you're not getting one!" as though AA batteries cost a small fortune.

My 11 yr old granddaughter loves fidgets and popits. When I was a kid I was obsessed with Dolls and I enjoyed playing with my slinky but mostly playing outside with my friends.

In addition to what @Murrmurr said (Lincoln Logs!): Slinkies.
My baby brother had one of the slinky wienie dogs...the slinky that looks like a Dachshund, and has a pull-string on it. He LOVED that thing! Named it Floppy and took it for walks all over the farm, and down to the school bus stop every weekday afternoon so him and his dog could see me home safely.

Good times 😊

I had to have a 'coonskin hat", or I would die. Davey Crocket had one, and I wanted one. The atom bomb and the 'Rooskies' didn't matter, I had to have that hat. My mom never relented. Those hats weren't cheap. Well, I never got the hat. I was crushed, but about a week later, I had forgotten about my coonskin hat. I just had to have a chemistry set, or I would die.

BTW, my brother is 10 years younger than me. I just couldn't believe it when he wanted a doll- GI Joe. A DOLL!!!!!
