These Fires in Southern California are a Nightmare.

Big bear is threatened. One of the cams for the Big Bear eagle nest is down. Smoke is evident on the other. This community could go. Makes me feel sick inside. The eagles should be able to out fly the fire but their habitat and nest would be destroyed.

I feel so bad for the people. This will never end I fear.

There are 3 major fires going in Southern California at the moment, that I know of. The Bridge Fire has been throwing a lot of smoke and ash our way since mid afternoon yesterday. We are concerned for our friends and the residents of Wrightwood and Pinon Hills, 2 of our 3 communities in the Tri-Community area. The local sky resort- Mt. High Ski Resort suffered fire loss, unclear how much had burned.

My heart goes out to all the people in California who are affected. Very sad when trees and natural habitats get destroyed by wildfires. Seems like the poor folks in California never get a break with the fires, floods, mudslides, etc. I don't blame you for feeling sick, I hope you and your family stay safe. Hugs.

It is quite scary to even see those fires on the news! I can imagine how horrible and frightening it is for the people who live there and those who have had to evacuate. With this last fire, thousands of homes and businesses were in danger and thousands were told to evacuate!! Of course it's tragic for wildlife as well. It's mind boggling. So far I haven't heard of any deaths and that's good, but to lose one's home and precious possessions is heartbreaking.

I'm thankful that my home town must be safe, I grew up in a southern California beach town. At the same time I ache for all those affected by the fires. Here in BC there are fires all over , we get days with a lot of smoke then we get a wind that blows the smoke away, so far we are safe . I just hope that when we get the wind, that it doesn't make the fires worse.

The number of out of whack humans in populated regions, varies logarithmically with [urban human population] densities and inversely with assets.

Take a look at this terrific telephoto lens evening shot someone took towards downtown Reno with the threatening Davis Fire in the background. And palm tree silhouettes even!

The whole Reno-Carson City-Tahoe area is so beautiful, I've always fantasized about moving there.
I’ve lived in 5 states and this area is really beautiful. When an area burns you know you won’t live to see it return to its former glory if you’re older.

We were lucky today because they thought we would lose a bunch of houses because of the severe wind and other conditions that would accelerate the fire. The wind shifted direction and a few things worked in our favor.

It’s almost always either an arsonist or someone being careless. I’m sorry Remy for what you are experiencing with the California fires.

Fires, especially wildfires, are terrifying. The communities come together to help each other. It’s dangerous work for those firefighters.

Yes, I agree. I have driven through that area 3 or 4 times. Driving through the Sierras and driving through Incline Village. I can’t remember all of that area, but we left San Francisco, went over the Bay Bridge, which was the only bridge that ever made me nervous because of the ‘89 earthquake. Then past Oakland and onward into the forest. We also went past a prison I remember driving through the big redwood trees and the cedar trees.

I had flown into SFO the day before and left the morning of the quake heading to O’Hare in Chicago where I hoped to catch the World Series game that got stopped due to the quake. Our reason for the drive was to go to Reno, which if I remember correctly, it was a three or three and a half hour drive, but a really nice trip nonetheless. I really enjoyed my trips to San Francisco, but I have heard the best days of the city have passed.

A California fire fighter has been arrested for starting FIVE wildfires. Was part of Cal Fire and started them in his off time.

Pyromaniac or overtime hound? Pathetic and shameful pos affected more than nature.

Police have arrested 91 suspected arsonists this year alone.
There is "something" in the psyche of some firefighters that holds a fascination with fire. It's no doubt been studied...

It’s a shame to see the woodlands and animals that are being destroyed by fires. We have a lot of woodlands here in PA with our mountains, forests and state parks, but I can’t remember of any fires being like out west.

The picture of the fires outside of Reno are a realization of how much destruction these fires can cause. It looks scary, to be honest. Hats off to the men and women fighting these fires.

When I was 27, myself and 2 other men hiked the Appalachian Trail. It was an amazing experience. To see all of the things the forests have to offer was quite interesting. Most people think only about the trees and deer, bears and a few different birds. We saw things on the forest floors that none of us could identify.

This is why I look at a forest fire as one of the worse disasters we experience here in the U.S. Too many living things and not just trees are destroyed. I see acres upon acres being burned and it triggers a flashback to walking through the forests and seeing so many trees, animals, flowers, birds and nests, insects, just about one of every living thing. It’s amazing.

Another news story reflecting the use of ALPRs, automatic license plate readers, I greatly support.

A 34-year old Norco man has been arrested on suspicion of arson in connection with a fire that has now burned more than 36,400 acres in the San Bernardino Mountains, authorities announced Wednesday. The fire, which began Thursday afternoon at the edge of open space and homes, has forced evacuations in Big Bear, Running Springs and other mountain communities.

Justin Wayne Halstenberg, a contract delivery driver from Norco, was arrested Tuesday, according to the San Bernardino Sheriff's Department. He is accused of starting the fire near Base Line Street and Alpine Street in the city of Highland, authorities said.

Sheriff Shannon Dicus announced at a Wednesday morning news conference that Halstenberg is suspected of intentionally setting the fire, and investigators are looking into the possibility that he may be responsible for setting others. Dicus said automatic license plate readers captured a license plate of a vehicle connected to Halstenberg near where the Line Fire began.

I do not understand why a person would do this. I've heard of arson for defrauding insurance companies and can understand that crime because there's a motive but cannot fathom arson of this type.
