They don't make things like they used to

Saw this post on social media and had to laugh:

" I think my electric knife was bought by my grandmother in the 1960s and it smells like it’s going to burst into flames every time i use it and i am going to use it til it does."

My own mother had the same clothes dryer for longer than it should have been alive. When it finally died, I wrote to the company. Never got a reply.

I have a portable mixer that still works, but also smelled like fire. Got a new one and the beaters keep falling out of their sockets.

LOL..are you sure you don't have a problem smelling fire everywhere you go ?:sneaky::ROFLMAO:

I had a secondhand Sunbeam electric beater with bowl. Whenever I wanted to whip up some cream I could immediately smell oil coming from somewhere, so decided to throw the cream out and started again. Yep, the same thing happened. I managed to whip up 4 cartons of cream with the same result and gave up in the end. The sponge cake only had jam in it, and it wasn't quite the same. Never found out where the smell was coming from and decided to throw the machine out.

Appliances used to last 30 years. Now you’re lucky if they make it 10.
very... we're told here now ..not to expect ''white goods ''. to last more than 5 years...

It's incredible.. because these things are not cheap so why can't they make them last as they once did.

I have washing machine which is now about 15 years old..I'd like a different one.. but I'm not in any hurry to spend up £1000 on something that might last 5 years or less, so I'll just keep the one I have

Somethings such as cars are a lot better. 100,000 miles on a car these days is no big deal.

OTOH, home appliances like washers, dryers, refrigerators seem to be more prone to failure and need repairs. I even had one sales person warn me that modern washers were not that reliable and I had better purchase the service contract. I told her if the washer was that unreliable I would not buy it. That ended the pressure.

When my parents both passed away, I rang a refrigerator mechanic near Mum's place to say I had an old Kelvinator refrigerator with 1953 written on the back of it and still working. He came around immediately and said these were the best fridges as they were a sealed unit and never broke down. It was 36 years old.
