Things You MUST Do If You're NOT Downsizing in Retirement

No, our WH gave no warning. In fact, it was because I DO drain the rust out periodically, that the plumber said is probably the reason why it lasted 3x longer than its warranty. LOL!

You probably did not say that the way you meant to. If you were draining rust out, that was your warning that it was time to replace it. If you were only seeing clear water when you drained it, then it did not give you any warning.

I have steel reinforced hoses... and I still turn the water off when not in use.
